Hi guys,

I am due to travel on Ryanair to Bergerac next week for holiday, but I have been slightly alarmed to hear from a friend of a friend (who has been there recently), that the security were confiscating cables from hand luggage. I wondered if anyone here had seen anything like this or could shed any light onto how serious this is, or if it's completely bogus?!

"You could strangle someone with it". Better not take my own two hands on board then...

Btw, we are only taking 1 bag of hand luggage each, as this is sufficient for the amount of stuff we need to take so aren't checking a bag into the hold.

Cheers

There should be no restrictions on mains cables for a laptop charger or data cable etc. I travel very regularly with cables for my work laptop, Blackberry and so forth and have never had a problem. I do tend to put them all in a small pouch.

If we were to stop carrying anything that could be used as some for a weapon then we would all travel nakid and everything would be in the hold. I personally would ask for the source of the restriction, it certianly won't be anything from the CAA/FAA or EAA.

Why stopped you, RyanAir or local security?

That can't be right, thousands of people fly with laptops all of the time.

From what little I was told, it was the security at Bergerac airport had confiscated some cables off a passenger. They would retain it for 30 days for you to arrange collecting it (I presume getting it posted to home).

I have to say I was cynical from the offset, but it just put a seed of doubt in my mind. My thoughts were exactly as you say, thousands of businessmen travel daily with laptops and chargers of all description.

I'm sure it will be fine, cheers guys.

As a regular traveller, the only airport I've discovered with cable issues is Zurich. This makes transitting through there a royal pain in the arse (along with UK flights using buses... ranting)

Would that be like the last flights in to LHR T5 that always park of stand or the flights in to Paris CDG that appear to land in central Belgium and then taxi to the boarder to collect a bus service to the terminal?

Or Schiphol airport where you cross 3 (count them, 3) motorways to go ploughing in field or something
