Anyone else noticed that there seems to be a marked increase in the number of these flying fcensoredg stinging bcensoredds?

Damn things have made some potentially quite pleasant weather and outings mildy unpleasant with their persistent 'personal space' invasion!

What possible good do these things do - what is their purpose in the scheme of things?

Try to hit them really often, the reason they are so close is they want you to hit them.

Some Chap on the radio confirmed that there was indeed more around than usual at the moment but I missed the reason why.

Try one of those electric tennis racket thingys. These 'uns:

They make a satisfying sizzle on contact. Just don't "try it out" to see if it's working with your finger. Which would be the mistake I made...

The bds also seem to be attracted to Hi-Viz, which is great when your smoking area is deemed a "Hi-Viz" area (due to the danger of falling pianos or something - it's nowhere near the yard/warehouse) and people chuck their discarded, sugary coffee cups in the bins.

They say the difference between bees and wasps is that wasps don't die after they sting you. I'd like to see one of the little fkers try out that theory on me.

Dont mind bee's, they seem to be quite chilled and mind their own business. But the bcensored wasps are just real 'in your face' annoying - they must know they dont die after 1 sting so are happy to wing it on the off chance they have to offload on you.

It's great that there's more wasps around. There's far fewer butterflies, bees, hoverflies (when did I last see a hoverfly??), ladybirds and even dragonflies so any increase in any of their numbers is great news. There's no need to keep killing them just because they cause momentary nuisance.

Don't panic around a wasp and they won't sting you. I haven't been stung since I was 6 and only then because I flapped about like a nancy.

If they try to get into your drink, put something over it til they get bored. Etc. Etc.

Oh yes, we all know you should ignore them and they'll go away, we all know that you should be as cool as The Fonz when in the company of a Jasper.

But that doesn't stop us flailing around like an epileptic at a disco whenever one comes within 20 feet of us.

Im afraid I dont share your enthusiasm, and where I am there are plenty of hover flies, and in the last week there have been some Boeing sized dragon flies hurtling round.

This 'dont flap' theory is great, and one which we adopted with my mrs daughter. She sat statue still and the little pr!ck still stung her on the hand, now shes absolutely scared sh!tless of the damn things.

I think one of these electronic tennis racket jobbies has to be internet order of the day!

Well, yes, but it's self-perpetuating. Flap about like a tt and they'll most likely get hit, sting you and you'll be even more likely to flap about next time.

I do come from a family that is pretty 'into wildlife' so I guess I've not picked up the habit from others.

I've never seen the need to kill something that is, when you think about, just occupying a bit of space near you and is taking the same interest in your range of sweetmeats as you are.

Well I can't explain that, but did you disturb or flap at other wasps, meaning they might be on the look out for the aggressor?

No, we were sat in the garden and were aware that it was hanging around, so as soon as it landed on her - told her to stay still and it'll be fine. Next thing, OWWWWWW and streams of tears. Not always the case I know, but they just seem to be very in your face at the moment. I popped out of the office not 20 minutes ago, and within 2 minutes a wasp had swung by within 6 inches of my face.

Whilst I appreciate that they are most likely hanging around for the sweety wrappers and sweet drinks cans etc that us humans leave around - when Im minding my own business nowhere near a bin, I dont take kindly to buglife trying to make up home in my ear, particularly one with a multi-action sting thing attached to its @rse wink

Be green & kill 'em with solar energysmile

Although with all the wasps I've got that seem to be impervious to nest killer (they're in the cavity yikes) I do fancy the Exterminator racquet...

The little feckers seem to like blue, specifically Suzuki K9 blue, and also the blue in my helmet.
Fortunately not many in Edinburgh but loads of those harmless hover/fruit fly things that look a bit waspish when then are so close to the visor they are hard to focus on.

I have only been outdoors twice this week and both times me and everyone else was harassed by wasps.
Nothing sweet, perfume etc for them to go after.

The only time they were not as noticable was during the kart racing at Castle Combe, or maybe that was the noise that attracted them...lol

Why don't they just buzz off.

p.s. I had 4 ladybirds on the bonnet of my car yesterday.

thank goodness wasps are known not to like purple.
