No, not a showing off thread...

Last week my kids were involved in an event at nursery for charity, which involved them being in a public place. There was a photographer from the local newspaper who took some shots.

Within the paper itself is a fairly large picture of my son, and then on their website is a picture of my daughter complete with full name and age (she's only one year old...).

Is this legal? No consent has been given.

Why would there be a problem with it?

Newspapers don't need consent to print names and photographs.

AFAIK there is no requirement for permission in a public place. As for the naming of your daughter, where did they get the info from?

10+ years ago you'd have thought 'fantastic!' and been very proud, and stuck it on the fridge. But now you think they're going to be kidnapped by a man in a dirty raincoat - such is the society we've grown into frown

Get over it! It's perfectly legal.

I suspect your kids love being in the paper... I did when a newspaper photographer came to my school as a kid. I can't believe there's anything dangerous or innapropriate, but of course if you feel he's really a closet paedophile intent on praying on your children maybe an alarmist letter to the Daily Mail is in order? Possibly The Sun... You could form a mob to lynch the local Paediatrition too.

My kids had their photo taken for the local evening paper last year at a craft fair that we were at, and the photographer asked me for permission first, I thought it was just a done thing to get the parent's permission?

We also have forms come home from school asking for permission for the kids to be photographed/filmed while at the school (performances, school leaflets etc)

Is it because your kids are ugly and you're really embarrassed?

You'll notice the perfectly neutral tone of my posting. Of course I'm mighty chuffed, I have kept the relevant pages and indeed will be buying a photo of each from the paper at £4.95 each.

I was merely questioning the legality of this act - especially in the current Daily Wail paedo-alarm world we live in.

I'm perfectly aware that my kids heads have not been superimposed on to other images or anything like it.

The name info came from the nursery staff, I presume.

In all seriousness, whilst the photo is fair game, I would have thought getting the name and age info would have been down to a parent's consent.

If you are genuinely concerned about it, speak to the paper's editor. Of course it is possible the older child maybe gave the names, but if it were the nursery, I think you may need to a word with them.

But dont panic or get it out of proportion. Enjoy seeing you kids in the paper, I bet they're pleased as punch!

Of course its legal. Public place = no restrictions. The names and ages of your children are publicly available, so also = no restrictions.

See now most people when their kids are in the local paper would get a copy or two and keep them as souvenirs.

It would have been polite to ask, but busy local newspaper journalists wouldn't have time for that sort of thing.

I had my photo taken several times for the local paper when I was at school. Didn't ask my parent's permission, just asked me what my name and age was, took the photo, a week later me and the other children would be in the paper and my grandparents would be down the newspaper office asking for a copy of the photo so they could frame it.

Did you not sign a consent form for the school/nursery?

We did and it mentioned photos in the paper specifically.

When you son/daughter starts at a school the school has to ask if you OBJECT to having their photos published...

If you do not tick that box, the school can do more or less what they want with the images etc...

The fact that you are even remotley concerned is a poor reflection on yourself.... grow some!

yes same here, specific bit of paperwork.

I think any reasonable photographer would ask out of common decency and politeness, but that doesn't mean they have to.

Would you care to retract that final sentence?
