Temp under rear clip

I did some research, with an 8 channel logger with probes around the engine bay. I was looking at temps to see what difference removing the top grill made on my GTR. I may be able to help, have you a specific question? The only question then is how much does an individual setup make, ie from car to car?

Strange this morning when I searched the Ultima forum for "air intake" loads of stuff came up. A couple of days ago I got nothing.
I have two issues really one being air intake temps which my searches this am have helped with.
The other is maximum under hood temps because I am wanting to fit an auto fire extinguisher which is heat activated. I obviously don't want false activations. The temp at which it will go off is 152 deg cent

Decided to test LuckyP's idea of testing the intake charge temp , firstly with just the standard Holley filter on and rear lid closed in my garage , oh and I'm based in South Africa , the intake temp at idle averaged 80/85 deg/C at 1500 rpm and went up to 90/94 deg/C at 3000 rpm .
I then extended a 130 mm silicone pipe through the rear intake lid down into the carb , with the temp pick up still at the carb the intake charge temp went to 33 deg/C at 1500 rpm and at 3000 rpm it went up to 45 deg/C .
By the way I've Increased my front fans to SPAL's new 11" 1600 CFM fans , thats a total of 3200 CFM ,thats 1400 CFM more than the 10" Pacet fans, when the fans kicked in the intake temp increased from 33 deg/C to 45 deg/C , so the heat from the front fans changed the intake temp by 12 deg/C .
What can I say 50 deg/C better off at the worst scenario parked in a garage.....
Sooooooooo....... Im looking for ideas and hopfully some CAD drawings or photo's of a new design cold charge intake filter to fit on an AMS 685 hp (377) , thats got a 4150 hp series carb .........

Reverie make a filter housing with two inlets so that you can pipe the air in from the side scoops that they also produce.Steve
Dont be tempted to pressure feed your carby engine without consideration to tuning adjustments....especially your big bore 377 motor in warmer a climate and if you are at altitude.
Without adjustments it would be better to have a large volume cold-air supply passing very close to the the carb so it could swallow whatever it required. Or, if you are hell-bent with the direct supply duct then extend the duct beyond the carb top and introduce some sort of pressure-release flap downstream.

I have data logged my LS1 in my GTR with my Motec 800. With the Kinsler I.R. set up and no cold air box the inlet temp ran as high as 130F on a 90F day at 70mph. I have huge K/N filters on the Kinsler the filters are in thier catalog under sprint car filters. The filters will handle 2400 CFM. This problem was particulary acute once the car had been run heat soaked and started back up even at 70 mph the inlet temps were not being reduced much.
Built a alloy box that mates with a rubber seal to the hood when it closes. powder coated the inside of the box in Black crakel paint and covered the outside of the box in the high dollar gold foil. This foil is suppose to reject 87% of all the heat that hits it. Result is that the inlet temps now run consistantly within 2 or 3 degrees of ambiant outside air temp. Think about it, every 7 degrees F drop in inlet temp is 1% horse power. on the example above the box lowered the temp somewhere around 37 degrees F thats 5% horse power that I am not losing. The motor makes 565hp at standard temp so at 90 degrees it is losing about 2.5% hp making around 554 hp if the inlet temp is at 130 then the motor only makes 522 hp. Lee

That helps with both of my questions ie it sounds like underhood temps do not get near to 152 deg centigrade even at standstill in traffic. So it won't set off the auto fire exstinguisher that I want to fit.
Also I have a Can Am and I don't like hot air blowing out of the top "inlet" on the rear clam and cooking me when I am driving. So I would like to fit a system such as yours to allow the engine to inhale ambient air through that scoop to give more power and to stop the warm draught.
Are you prepared to discuss the tecnique that you used to build an air box that seals against the clam?
