what money to take to turkey

You'll need a £10 note per person at the airport for a visa. Have a few Lira available for when you get there.
Then use your ATM - withdrawing fairly large amounts at a time. This way you will get a better exchange rate than that available over there in the post-office or bank, and significantly better than what you'll get over the counter here in the UK. Taking out fairly large amounts means your ATM charges will be limited. Mine were £2 a time this year.
It also means you don't have to worry about looking after cash or travellers cheques on your holiday.
Don't take £, € (although some places will take them) and certainly not $.

I think it depends where you go. We went to Antalya although my friend has just got back from Side and said it was the same there; I took half Euros and half Lira, and couldn't get rid of the Lira. In the tourist places everyone quotes in Euro and prefers to take it and as they do a 2:1 ratio of Lira to Euro, it's actually better at the moment to take Euro due to the exchange rates.
Also, I changed Lira at the rate of 2.26 before going but the hotel I stayed it were doing it at 2.6 so should have waited until I was out there(!)

I bought my visa with Visa / Mastercard in Ankara when I visited a client there 2 weeks ago, so I wouldn't sweat it if you don't happen to have cash on you (the whole visa process took 30 seconds & payment was a normal chip 'n' pin affair).
USD or GBP should be fine. If you're catching a taxi from the airport, make sure you have some Turkish Lira.

I was in Icemeler / Marmaris this year and I took ££'s out the cash machine and changed them in Turkey.
Taking out ££'s meant that I never got charged by the Bank and I changed it in small grocery shops which always have a better exchange rate than the banks etc.
Note that these shops will not have signs up advertising the exchange rate so either just ask the guy behind the counter or chances are that someone staying at your hotel will know which shop to go to.
