Hi Owen, despite the heavy side impact to your car last Sunday, you did seem in remarkably good condition when you got out, relatively speaking. How much of that can you attribute to wearing a Hans device?

I now have some hefty bruises on my left side where the harness and device dug in, but thats a small price to pay for walking away.

Ultimately I transferred enough energy from my car to Bens to shift it about 40ft, so it was an almighty whack ( probably somewhere circa 100 mph bearing in mind I was flat in fifth when the slide started and I hit him about 4 secs later) Im sure that if I hadnt been wearing it my neck would be showing the signs of the trauma involved in moving it from right to left at such a rate. Although my presumption was that they were really designed to work in frontal accidents, Im convinced that in this instance it helped enormously by limiting the amount of lateral movement.

I suppose the proof of the pudding is 4 days later I have no signs of whiplash at all, which no doubt, would have been a completely different story without the HANS. The bruises are good for making the girls go OOOOHHHHH. ( and you should see the one on my leg from where it hit the steering column!)

I would recomend the HANS wholeheartedly.

The design of the seat probably provided quite a bit of protection in the side impact - it had head restraint 'ears' to limit lateral movement

Thanks for that Owen. Decission made. I'm off to Tweaks at weekend to get measured up for one as well as helmet and new underwear (the ones I wore on Sunday are too badly soiled to put back on wink ). I'm also looking at where I can fit a fuel cell. Looks like the new tyres will have to wait.

Make sure you get one with the new "vision" straps. I think they are standard now, but they allow your head to turn rather than having 2 seperate fixed straps.

Matt and i where talking about race seats with the ears before going out to qually, this came about because i keep banging my helmet on the rollcage in the corners(the cockpit is very tight). We will now definetely be changing the seat and getting a hans device. I have been using a kart neck brace up untill now which would be completely useless in a shunt like last weekend.

Hi All,

With regards to HANS, all I can say is go and get one, in a matter of time they will become mandatory for sure. I got a hans the same month I got a Tuscan and would wear it no matter what I raced. Safety first.....

Sam,
I agree about the mandatory use and I agree (though in a very considered way) safety first.

My earlier post which I deleated eluded to evaluation and prioritising in relation to Safety. It could have been taken out of context, hence the removal.

Useful info here on the head and neck restraint.

Hi Dave,

I've a feeling you'll possibly need to change the harness as well.

My helmet has Hans Posts fitted and at Rockingham the scrutineer said that my harness was too wide to use with a Hans device if I had one. I hadn't so it didn't matter.

I used standard non hans harnesses last year and no-one said anything. when I changed the car and needed to upadte the harnesses I went Hans specific at that point. You might be OK for a while until you need to upgrade them anyway. ( scrute dependent I suppose!)

A hans is certainly a good idea, although it my understanding that in sideways impact they dont do much.. there is also an increased risk of collar bone and possibly lung damage. but both are preferable to a basilar skull fracture!!!.

I'd urge anyone to use a neck brace at the very least.. as they are only a few pounds, and a Hans if possible... I've had 2 big side impact offs, one without a neck brace and one with..the one with arguably being bigger.. I still suffer a bit from the first one almost 10 years later, and after a few grands worth in physio!!

You can use a standard harness with a HANS but you can't use a HANS harness without a HANS. The scrute at Rockingham was incorrect in this case

I have been using HANS since 2004 and I wouldn't race without it. I changed for the vision tethers this year and it removed the one downside - restricted side vision.

It will do nothing in a side impact though - for that you need a seat with head restraint ears. Easier said than done in a modern TVR - still haven't found a way to fit one in the Sagaris

my Kirky alloy seat has bolt on ears for side protection and that fits in the Tuscan ok... the sag though might be more challenging with the need to get through the door

An eared seat fits easily in the Tuscan. The problem with the Sag, S6 Tuscan and T350 is the window line angles in sharply towards the roof - you don't have the width to accomodate the 'ears'

Had the same problem with the cerb! A great deal of cutting and fiberglassing had to be done to fit the seat in!

I have eared seats being delivered this week, I wonder if they will fit into my Tuscan with the roof on?

There is no problem fitting the seats into Tuscan Challenge cars - the side window profile is pretty much vertical. Not the case with later cars which have a distinct 'shoulder' profile at the door tops and windows sloping inwards towards a narrower roof

See what you mean..

Andy

Would using a HANS devise make getting out of the car more difficult if you had to,(say fire)in the case of Danny's Tuscan.
We are seriouly looking at going that route but dont want to create another problem with regard escaping from a fire ?
