Bought a 2008 LaPierre 714 in feb.. it got nicked last Saturday at Centre Parks in Sherwood Forest....if you get offered one let me know...I know about specific spec...

anyway as and when insurance pays out I'm trying to decide between

Scott Spark 30 £1450
Cube AMS Pro XT £1600
Lapierre Pro Race 500 £1700
Specialized Stuntjumper HT Expert £1350

Wasn't totally sold on full sus so am going back to lighter better looking HT.....or the Cube...what would you have and why?

or have I missed one?

I guess if you did'nt like full suss it's because of the riding you do. Where/what do you ride? That's important when it comes to choosing your new bike...

in a way it is yeah.... predominantly its forest trail, road, cross New Forest stuff...where its not necessary...and the odd trip to QE Park near Portsmouth and the Marin Trail in North Wales...where it most definitely was!

I'm just missing the cleaner lines, the quicker responses, less weight etc...

surely a 714 is going to net a payout greater than £1500?
personally, i would go for an custom special. if you want a hardtail, the best thing to do is start with the frame, take none of the component compromises that you will find on an off the peg bike and spec it exactly as you want.

if it were me i would be looking at a Cotic Soda or a Van Nicholas...

I've got a stumpie M5 hardtail, expert - was more like £1,500 as I recall, in fact its the second I have owned (.. thieves again)

I love it, very engaging ride - I don't think you will be disappointed based on your comments above. Great for UK twisty / rooty singletrack, and great on climbs.

I like full suss too, but I find the stumpie more rewarding on the majority of UK trails outside of the realy mountainous areas of the country. Was the perfect bike for an Austrian (XC) alp trip a month or so ago.

I've never ridden one but I had a good look at that frame on the On-One stand at bikeradar, it was simply gorgeous, and the weight difference between it and the standard Inbred was amazing. I would love one, and it rates very highly in terms of being able to handle FS territory with ease should you need too.

The Hub at Glentress were doing some beautiful Ti builds the other day...I can't remember for the life of me what the frames were, but they were reduced, and you could even choose between matt and polished Ti!

One day!

Oh crap! I wish you hadn't said that. banghead

Today was the first day this week that I haven't been on the net looking at those things. Spoke to a guy locally with one - he's a fit, and pretty competant rider - and he's totally smitten with it.

I want to make an uber-single speed Ti 456 for the winter. (Currently negotiating permission with Mrs Digga as this would be the 3rd new bike this year.)

Those ti bikes look gorgeous, but after speccing and building go beyond my budget.... yep...due to admin error my £2100 bike got insured for £1500....don't ask...furious

Love the Van Nicholas stuff but using their spec-building option...puts it WAY out of my league...

Thinks it going to be between the Scale 30 and the Stumpy..
Although if insurance take ages to pay up I could be well into last season sale territory....

i feel really sorry for you with regards to the insurance. can you buy a VN frame and build it yourself?, i dont know if they do frame only but you might just make it under budget if you hunt around for cheap deals on components from the usual suspects. the scott is an awesome bike and will be a blast. do try them both though as from memory, the top tube on the spesh is about an inch shorter than the scott.

Possibly Genesis Altitude Ti frames?

I hope not because I'd really like one of those and haven't the fundage at the moment!
