I am thinking of booking a nice country spa hotel for 1 or 2 nights weekend break for my wifes birthday. This isnt for a few months yet. I'm, for once, trying to get things organised well in advance as its her 30th.

Can anyone recommend any hotels they've been to we're based in Surry and dont want to travel too far ideally within 1 - 2 hour drive. So Scotlands out smile

I'm wondering whether to take the dog or not for some nice country walks so maybe one thats dog friendly though im not totally sure on this idea yet.

Don't know if they're doggie friendly, but these are worth considering:

Had a week here earlier in the summer. Very good.

The silver tariff mentioned here is as good a deal as you'll get there and includes 60 quid of spa... http://www.calcotmanor.co.uk/rooms/offers.htm

The Summer Lodge in Evershot (Dorset).

Not sure if pooch would be welcome, though.

Agree on this one. Also you can try Bishopstrow House in Wiltshire.

Or if you really want to go even more upmarket there is Babington House near Frome. Frequented by a lot of celeb's for their weddings.

Bovey Castle in Devon is nice. Many activities for yourself if you want to do something else on your stay. Just take a look at the activities menu !
