We've all heard about Heston's £250 tasting menu, but its a growing trend.

I went to the Sportsman at Seasalter (Kent) on Wednesday night having pre-ordered their tasting menu and had the best food of my life there. I won't review it, there's plenty of info on the internet. Suffice to say simple local food, cooked with flair, understated and interesting. Memorable.

What experiences have others had with tasting menus?

I've only had experience of one tasting menu (old bakery in Lincoln) and it was fantastic, I tried a lot of food that I would never normally order myself and enjoyed it all the more for it.

I would certainly recommend it although I'm not sure if I would do it more that once at the same restaurant.

Probably my best ever meal was the tasting menu at Tabla in Manhatten. It was 4 years ago, NY was buried under a huge snowstorm and we bagged a table as other people couldn't travel in due to the snow.

Superb dishes (fusion of Indian and traditional American) and excellent wines to accompany.

Given the choice, I would always go for the tasting menu - I love that way of eating and I'm no advocate of the 'one big dish' approach much of the Western world takes to meals....

I'm a big fan. Nearly always have the tasting when it's on offer. It makes an evening of it rather than a meal and lets do something else.

The Fat Duck was stunning as you'd expect (but ONLY £125 a head +wine + + +) so the actual bill was £250 a head, don't let that put you off though!

I love tasting menus as a treat when we go to a top end restaurant. We try and do at least one starred restaurant a year as we don't go out much these days.

I'm off to Gidleigh Park next week for my 30th and having the full tasting menu with wines - can't wait!

Only ever had the tasting menu at the Fat Duck. Next month I get to compare it against Le Manoir...

I love tasting menus, really makes an event of the meal and usually gets me to try one or two things that i wouldn't normally order which is always fun.

Having the wines is a must too, made the mistake of choosing our own once, turned out very badly.

Mike325112 - You're in for a treat at Gidleigh Park if you're going for the tasting menu. We went last November and had the tasting menu and sommelier's selection of wines to accompany. We were shown around the wine cellar in the afternoon and he asked us generrally what sort of wines we preferred; any likes or dislikes and then put together his choice for the meal. Superb evening and the breakfast there the next morning was the best I've had a for a long time.

Love him or loathe him, Gordon does this well.

I also recently had the tasting menu at the Bingham Hotel in Richmond. That was very good too.

These degustation / tasting menues are very popular out here too in the "high end" restaurants like Jaan or Compass Rose.

Especially like the ones that team an appropriate glass of plonk for each plate so you get nicely schlozzled whilst the wife doesn't actually realise that you have had the better part of a bottle and a half through the meal!

Tried the Fat Duck last time i was back in the UK about 3 years ago and that was fantastic too!

I'm a very fussy eater and this would not normally be my thing, but tried the tasting menu at L'Enclume in Cartmel a few years ago and absolutely loved it.

Sorry have to disagree.. took Mrs M to Hestons place for the Tasting menu and we did end up thinking how many more??

I think you'd only go once... ok so he took £500 off us and he has a 90 days booking period and he's full every night so probably doesn't care about not having repeat customers... but nor did Nico Ladenis until he was "bettered"!!

To be fair, i personally think that the degustation menues work better when with a group of people rather than just a couple
