Hi,
Never done this before, i feel i could do it as i do most of my repairs.

Anyone give any info on removal of old and fitting of new.

Car is a Cortina based spartan, this is one of only 5 parts that is not
standard mk3 Cortina.

Many thanks.

Hmm, never seen them fixed by a replacement spider before, usually the whole lot gets done as one.

Yes, it's not usually considered a serviceable item and you would usually just replace the whole thing.

Cheers for the replies.

TheEnd, i see what your saying, i got old one out, (disc cutter) took bearing caps off, the spider dont fit, so yeah, probably made as one.

GreenV8S, Tried to get the whole thing, the company (Aghabridge Motor Factors)
don't do them no more, and sold me the replacement spider, bet they're
having a right LARF. (see you back in the S forum)

Will go back and see what else they got to say.

If i have no luck, can you suggest another forum, this is probably not the
right one, normally you would have had loads of replies. Or is it that this
is not a common problem.

Cheers again.

If its the correct spider it will fit, I have done propshaft ones before but not a steering one. Use grease to stop all the needles falling out. If you take the old one completely to bits you will see how it goes together. Its very simple once you understand how it was made.

Hi Yuxi, could'nt get old one off, so used angle grinder.

Also the replacement was same size, When you take off the cap part, (the part
that has the bearings in) you are left with a solid peice of metal in the
shape of a cross, this did'nt come apart, and would'nt fit, no matter what
angle you tried.

The new part is not the same as the origenal, maybe the
origenal came apart, but as above i could'nt do it, so grinded it off.

Cheers

I am working from memory now, and it was a propshaft but the same principle. Once all the cups are removed the diameter of the legs on the cross should be small enough so that the crosswill enter the two outer halves of the joint, then the cups and rollers are fitted. Are you sure you have completly in bits, all spring clips etc. out?

Yuxi, this did'nt have any spring/clips like the normal ones, as in take the
(is it) circlip off, then all comes apart. that's why i grinded it.

Anyway found a UJ on the net roughly same, had it welded on, so all's
well now. It was slighlt longer, so just cut the rod/round bar to fit.

Thankyou all for your input
