I have just seen my M6 disappear on the back of a flat bed lorry thanks to the dreaded 'red cog of death'. The gearbox started making some god awful noises and then the power just went completely as it started jumping between 5th and 1st (!) gear at about 30 mph. No chance of making it home so I had to wait by the side of the road for an hour to be recovered. Not exactly a good start, I have only had the car a few weeks!

p.s. I brought the car from BMW so do have a warranty luckily.

Often that's something minor such as a check valve or sensor getting confused.

Oddly, if it wasn't for that technology, it'd probably carry on fine!

I don't know it sounded pretty bad, the car would not go into gear at all when I stopped.

A number of these instances have been down to a hydraulic sensor on the gearbox or the SZL sensor which is is I think in the steering column. Both easy fixes and in the case of the SZL sensor BMW have modified the part.

Although inconveient hopefully an easy fix.

Good lesson in why it is vital that these cars have a top notch warranty!
