Was looking through the Apps on my new iPhone 3GS earlier and came across this app', it appears to do lap times, G-force, acceleration, etc etc etc and may be a very cheap limited alternative to a data logger.

It's £6.99 which is very expensive for an iPhone app though but that may suggest top quality.

Before I download it has anyone used it before?

FYI it's simply called "Track Day"

I'd love to try one of those apps but the main question for me is always - how do you secure the phone well enough to use on the track?

If you have a Nokia or a Windows mobile smartphone, download "Racechrono" off the internet. I used it at the 'ring and it was brilliant. Awesome for comparing laps/sector times/speeds etc.

I tried that app out. In fact it's my (1 star) review on the iPhone Store site.
It's really not up to much. It's not properly calibrated for starters, the timing function doesn't work well if you can get it to work at all, it asks for data you're never going to know (like "what is your car's squat angle?") and worst of all it has no datalogging/download function.

It also lacks any kind of instructions, so you don't know how to set up/fix your phone to do any kind of objective measurement.

Avoid IMO, it's just a gimmick.
