IBS sufferers......
Discussion
IBS is what a lot of doctors call undiagnosed stomach complaints. It tends to be a bit of a catch-all term unfortunately. Depending on your doc you could get various tests done, but the NHS won't test for everything (obviously they test for the real nasties though), private is a lot more flexible.
I'm pretty much an ex-ibs sufferer now.

Mine comes and goes, mainly just get that bloated need a poo feeling.
chewing food for longer seems to help instead of woolfing it down and eating less food in the first place seems to help too.
I gave up drinking alcohol on weekdays, lost 2.5 stone in weight since feb this year that helped a lot too.

Yeah, i figured that. Some GP's arent the best. I went to one years ago who told me to try Fybogel which seemed to help for a while but the problems are coming back. I want to try get it sorted as most will know, it does/can effect your life style.I'm pretty much an ex-ibs sufferer now.
Would going to the GP and asking to see a specialist be a good idea. Also, i have no private health care at the moment but i could look into it if there are benefits of going private.
Thanks for all the replies
Believe me get a specialist. My father, brother and sister are doctors and they repeatedly tell me to avoid GP's at all cost, they are retards.
Its your health, you (probably) pay taxes, so use the health service. Take no s
t, 5mins on google will tell you more than your GP. Don't want to scare you but it could be as bad as cancer, so get off your arse and DEMAND a referral.
PS. probably isn't cancer, obviously, but you have to take charge with your health in this country.

It's worth having a search on here as I've seen the topic come up several times.
As others have said the term IBS covers a number of conditions (and a doctor said to me that in the future he thinks they'll become conditions in their own right)
Two common causes are food intolerances and stress. The effects appear to be the same in my experience (I suffer from a couple of food intolerances, and my ex suffered with stress), ranging from bloating and indigestion feeling, headaches, dizzy feeling, stomach pain, through to a desperate need to go "right now".
Definitely worth going to your GP - I did, and my symptoms have reduced a lot. I think the most common first step is to keep a food diary (what you've eaten, and how you feel that day), and to try cutting out some of the common causes - gluten, dairy, maybe yeast. I got a massive improvement by cutting out wheat and dairy.
You can have tests for some food intolerances, but most of them aren't very reliable. Lactose intolerance can be reliabley diagnosed, but others seem to be more trial and error. And to be honest, having tried cutting out and re-introducing lactose I could tell you I'm intolerant without sitting through a 3 hour test after 12 hours of fasting.
Knowing what I know now, before going to my GP I would have tried cutting out gluten and dairy, seen how I got on, then gone to see them.

Yip, these are the three problems i mostly get!!I spoke with Bupa, which my wife receives from her work for free. They said i've to make an appointment with my GP who will refer me to them (Bupa) to get tests done and then we'll go from there.
Thanks for all the help and replies.

Can I just go to my doctor and ask for these tests? Will they test me to check my tolerance to wheat, gluten, dairy etc?
I think I have suffered from this for years and have been taking fybogel, this seemed to help for a while but I am now back to how I was.
Forget Doctors & GPs at this stage. Go to a good, qualified & registered nutritionist. They can provide the tests for food intolerence etc.I think I have suffered from this for years and have been taking fybogel, this seemed to help for a while but I am now back to how I was.

I would recommend cutting out all dairy products and trying things like goats milk cheese and goats milk butter instead.
Try and relax - my stomach always "behaves badly" when I'm nervous or stressed about something.
Booze I don't have a problem with. Homemade or fresh bread seems to give me some issues so this maybe a yeast related problem. I'm sticking with pitta breads recently and they're ok.

Also, expect a frustrating time. The gastro guy I saw admitted that we really know very little about the causes of intolerances, and IBS as a whole, and as such it really is trial and error.
