Just started episode one of this monster documentary. It's been quite a few years since I last sat down and watched. It is, in my opinion, by FAR the best, most intricate, and the most moving of all the WWII documentaries out there. halfway through the first episode and I would recommend this bit of this historical masterpiece to anyone. Show it to the kids, for it seems to me that history is going the way of Hollywood, and we need fto redress that balance... Go and get it!!!

The best war documentary that's ever been on TV.

The Nazi's - A Warning From History is pretty close behind though.

First screened in 1973!! Back then, they made proper documentaries for people with more than 20 seconds attention span. Some of the best TV ever made IMHO.

And they were not afraid to use footage and ask questions that today would have people wailing about showing respect for the war dead. Another great thing about the series is that some key figures were still alive during its filming and it was still recent enough history for the people in the films to remember with a clarity they dont have now.

So in otherwords, you've downloaded it, not bought it?

And, it's amazing to think these days, it was made by an ITV channel (Thames).

Possibly the greatest documentary series ever made.

I've recently borrowed the box set from a mate. That rather gimmicky DVD 'menu' is damned annoying, but it is an incredible series; as close to 'fair' and accurate as I think you could get. Harrowing, in parts, but given the subject material...

I bought it on DVD for £30 a few months ago, it is absolutely superb.

The best documentary I have ever seen and a must watch for everyone.

I was in secondary school at the time it was first shown (1973/74) and we were ordered to watch it by our history teacher.

I do find some of the graphic devices used rather quaint now. They rather remind me of the opening titles of "Dad's Army" or some of Tery Gilliam's Monty Python animations.

Ditto - and I recorded it off Sky earlier this year for my son to watch - WWII & the Cold War are on the GCSE History syllabus at the moment

It was considered such a good series, that our teacher essentially ignored WW2 completely and advised us to just watch the programme for all the details. We copvered the causes of the war in the classroom - but the war itself we ignored.
