Morning all,

A few months back there was a 'favourite poem' thread that threatened to subvert PH with some culture [shudder]. I therefore thought some of you might be able to help me find a suitable verse for use in a letter of condolence for someone I know who has just lost her father.

I didn't know the deceased, his daughter was the mother of my recent ex. We got on well though and I'd like to send a letter to know I'm thinking of the family and wanted to include a bit of poetry as a kind of reflection, but struggling to find something that strikes the right note.

Any ideas?

I'd say that self-written or "greetings card" doggerel poetry in that context will always sound twee. Even 'serious' poetry is, after all, someone else's thoughts and experiences, and might not fit with those of the recipient.

Just write in your own words what you honestly feel. That would be far more helpful and more touching, I would say.

^ Definitely. Poetry a very bad idea and will sound like the worst of Clinton's rubbish.

Just write a short, meaningful, sincere note.

I didn't know him, the poor old bloke,
Before the chance, he had to croak,
Soonest mended the least is said,
I'm really sorry he's now brown bread.

I'd put something like this:

"Just a few words to express my sorrow at your loss
You are all in my thoughts at this sad time

Best wishes"

Hmm, guess you're right, if I'm struggling to say something that aren't my own words then I probably shouldn't - wouldn't want to sound insincere.

Cheers.
