title should say deepsea really..

I am just being offered a rolex deepsea brand new for a very attractive price.
(about 15% below UK list price).
It is from an official dealer.
I have put my name down 6 months ago and they called today.
I have never seen the watch and they ask me to commit by end of today.

Should i or should i not?

It is quite a fair amount of cash to let go on a watch at such short notice.

Surely it depends on whether you want the watch? How can anyone else answer that for you?

Funnily enough I've just done the same last week and bought before trying the model on - I got circa 10% off from an authorized dealer due to someone not wanting the watch after putting it on order.

15% is a good price considering pre-owned Deepsea's are still being charged at a premium above RRP.

The Deepsea is a big watch with a 43mm face which gives it a bit more character in my opinion than most of the other 40mm Rolex watches - 43mm is not a huge issue assuming you have the wrist for it - mine is about 7 inches and the lugs just sit in the right place at the edge of my wrist.

The biggest issue for this watch is its case thickness at circa 17.6mm - It sits very high off my wrist even more so than any of the Panerai's I've owned.

I know some people have also commented on its weight at just over 210 grams but again this isn't an issue for me.

At the end of the day beauty is in the eye of the beholder but since getting it I've been 100% happy with my purchase and it gets plenty of compliments.

I would push for 20%- if you don't ask you don't get

I placed an order for a DeepSea at the same West London AD that I got the 16610 LV from in 2004 last September. I then proceeded to get a call December 20th (Saturday) when I was out of the country saying that one had come up and I could have it but would need to do the transaction that day.

As I wanted to actually see the watch in the flesh before committing to a +£5k purchase I asked them to keep it for me until Monday when I could view and make a decision. They declined as they had 'plenty of others on the waiting list'.

Still got a call back Monday to see if I was still interested- told them to p*ss off

This leads me to believe that a lot of people placed orders expecting it to be the next Stainless Daytona and then the credit crunch plus several Rolex price rises made it look like less of a surefire bet of making a few quid

Watchfinder have several for sale including one that is only a few months old for 500 off list- that tells me all about desirability of this model- make sure you bargain hard

Dom, got your email but am at work, will respond or telephone later. Will go and take a look tonight. It is a large amount of dosh for a watch. And i already have an explorer II which i am quite happy with. So not so sure what to do. I have a few other pleasant watches as well. Will report tomorrow..

btw, how much do these go for in excellent condition with papers, box etc..

seen it. It was ENORMOUS!

I like big watches as in 44mm panerai's.

But this was MASSIVE nd thick.

Not 100% sure about it.

There is a degree of disproportion to it.

210g is not as heavy as I thought. Everyone seems to love the Seiko 300 MM and that thing weighs about the same, is 42 or 43 mm wide and has a 20mm bracelet. That DSSD is very thick though, perhaps if it was say 15mm thick then the shock wouldn't be so great and ppl would get used to seeing it?

I love the DSSD, it was smaller than I expected, great fit for me.

Only one problem with it, I could not afford to buy one now biggrin

Exactly how big is this thing? Im wearing my Benarus Sea Devil today, that 45mm plus crown and almost 2 cm thick, if the SD even "bigger"??!

Is it not reasonable to expect to be seeing a Rolex RRP drop fairly shortly? The price rises were due to Rolex's global pricing policy and the fact that the pound was very weak, now that we are seeing the pound pulling it's socks up a little I would expect to see this reflected on UK pricing as has already been demonstrated by some other premium watch brands who have been a little quicker to react in a fair way.

Maybe they will, but I don't see how it's unfair if they don't. They're operating in a free market; they can set their prices at whatever they wish. If people don't like that, then they can buy something else.

As you say it's a freemarket and in the case of premium watch brands it's a global free market and the consumer is perfectly at will to buy their watches wherever in the world they wish, which is why the global pricing policy is in place where the same watch is meant to be of a similar (give of take a couple of hundred quid here and there) price wherever in the world it is bought. The fairness element comes into play where manufacturers are very quick to increase RRP's in specific countries (I think rolex had 4? increases in the UK in the last 18 months) when currency fluctuations work against them, they need to be equally quick in lowering RRP's when currencies gain strength for the policy to be fair not just to the consumer but also to their dealer network which is who afterall the policy is put in place to protect. Particulary when there are numerous non authorised dealers who are sourcing their stock globally, supplying grey imports and undercutting AD's, again there is nothing wrong with that in a free market but ROlex need to adjust prices in both directions (and I believe they do) for the idea to work.

Well if that's the case then maybe this global pricing policy is really just a one way ticket where they take the highest price in the world that they can get away with and then drag everybody else up to that level, not really fair in any sort of market IMO.

I think in some ways they can get away with it here as new updated models are introduced.

It seems to me that many ppl have a negative reaction to the DSSD because really they are waiting to see a new updated submariner with a ceramic bezel and slightly chunkier case.
