Yarm is overrated for food, if you ask me (I grew up there). There are a couple of decent (but heavingly busy) pubs there, which I used to frequent.

Ten years ago, there were 2 good restaurants (amongst the others) which changed hands more than once, and are now fairly average. Ciaras is ok though. I'd go to Akhbars for a curry in M'boro, for sure. Aside that, I'd be looking to the countryside for gastro-pubs. Some of which are very good.

If you have access to a car, I'd suggest The Golden Lion, in Osmotherly, and the Crab & Lobster near Thirsk. C & L would be my pick, but it's a good 45 mins from Boro. Closer than Newcastle, I suppose.

However, for a city as vibrant and lively as Newcastle, it really is a dead zone for fine dining..

You're obviously a Boro boy as that line goes down a storm with proper Geordies.

I'm sure it does. It's really funny.

To the best of my knowledge, most (all) Geordies don't come from Boro. They come from Newcastle. Newcastle is not a 'place in Boro'. It's a different city in a different county. It's marginally closer than Leeds. So shall we suggest that, too?

Apologies for the lack of clarity... And delayed reply.
Yarm has fitted the bill most respectably. Just general pub grub. (£18 meal allowance.) And a reasonable standard of drinking.

Back in sept for a couple of nights. I reckon the best western near Yarm will be booked over the thistle in mid city centre.

Thanks for the help folks!
