I am looking for some ideas for a day out for the missus birthday in October. I has to be a special one, budget approx £500, ideally not weather dependant, no overnighters as her folks can only look after the children for the day. Were located near Basingstoke, will travel within reason (no more than an hour or so by road/rail).

Initially I was hoping to do the Orient Express from Chichester but would you believe it's fully booked for Friday 16th October! So much for a recession rolleyes I didn't for a moment think I would struggle to get 2 x people booked in for a Friday in the middle of October, fresh out of ideas and anything decent I will need to look at booking now.

As I said initially, no overnighters as her folks can only look after the children for the day. Her birthday is actually on the Saturday, have more of a family day planned for then. Just wanted to do something for us on the Friday...

I'm a fan of top end food places, taking mrsB to London for her birthday in September and going here http://www.wildhoneyrestaurant.co.uk/

Choice is huge though, depend on how foody you are. If London is out, how about L'ortalan in Reading or my current favourite Vatika near Portsmouth. It's on a Vineyard so you can do a tour and tasting before the meal as well followed by maybe a private boat trip at Portsmouth?

Book a hotel in London, take her up the OXO tower, head back to the hotel and take her up the bum smile

Failing that £500 will do Brugge for a weekend smile

Ha Ha Ha nice....

How about a trib down to brighton, first start by taking her Zorbing in the Sussex countryside, then go into town for Lunch or dinner with a shopping trip around the lanes and then take her to the theatre at The Brighton Dome (There are other places)or to a jazz club or comedy club at Komedia.

I have no valid advice, purely because i'm in no position to spend £500 on one day out...

However it always makes me chuckle to read replies when the replier has clearly only read the thread title and perhaps loosely scanned the actual post - They're in such a hurry to post their incredibly interesting and well informed response that they neglect to notice it's completely missed the point and overlooked some pretty vital factors in the original poster's question...

' Need to take the missus for a nice day out, can't be overnight '

' Take her to Magaluf for the week, sorted! '

Ok.
Flame & Thunder at the Pod. Just go for the day. Don't camp the weekend, don't forget you need to look after the kids that night.

it'd be way out of the OPs budget. Starts at £530 for two in the spa...

OK. It won't cost as much but why not do lunch at Tylney Hall and then enjoy a walk around the grounds? Very civilised and you can get a taxi there and back within your budget..

Fly to Vienna for a two night break? Possibly over budget though.
Possibly too long as well considering the OP says "it has to be a DAY out"

Pop to the Channel Islands for lunch. It's a 40 minute flight from Southampton.
