Noisy cars - what are the rules?
Discussion
Now before I start, I love the sound of a good engine and exhaust especially tearing down an A road, or round a track or whatever.
However.
My neighbour 5 doors up has got himself a souped up Scooby. And not only is it very noisy in decibels, it actually has a "boom" that is really annoying. Not sure if he has a remote starter on it, but whatever time he decides to leave in the morning, the car sits for a few minutes, just enough to waken everyone in my house (and no doubt the houses in between).
Then when he sets off, my house is just at the point he switches from 1st to 2nd.
Then same again when he comes home at whatever time, car then sits idling for a few minutes before it switches off.
Do I just need to accept this or is there anything that I should do (his wife is a Police Officer)
I stress, I don't want to be a party bore, but the noise, the wakening up at all hours, is really annoying!
I am sure there are plenty on here with noisy exhausts, do you do anything to be considerate to your neighbours or just blast away and to hell with them?

I don't rev mine until I'm out of the main raods. Sounds like he's warming it up before driving off, but if it's too loud at tickover not much you can do . You could speak to him. I think the rules are if the police reckon it's too loud then they can get him to quieten it.

Sounds like the guy is warming his car up, though i can understand that being annoying (he wouldnt really need to if he took it easy and stayed off boost until the car was warmed up, but that's my theory other people would disagree)
but I'm guilty of having a loud exhaust too :S
(around 110db, nice big equal length downpipes to a 3.5" straight through drain pipe... no doubt everyone will hate me now and label me a chav)
but as nice as the sound of the skyline's straight six is, i found it a bit obnoxious to be sat in Edinburgh's traffic drowning out everyone's music on the way to work. So i fitted the car with a sprung valve exhaust baffle (and modified it slightly) so the exhaust gets squeezed through a tiny 1" exit until i hit 3,500rpm (which never happens till i'm well out of town)
the end result is until i get to an open road, or a tunnel the car is virtually silent (at idle its as loud as my g/fs diesel polo).... once i'm out of town i let it scream like a banshee
means less annoyed neighbours, less dirty looks from cops, and less droning when cruising.... and probably less cool points from the import posse (but i grew out of that a long time ago)

There is a big thread on it here. It is all a bit hazy methinks.

Worth a read. I have a TVR but rarely ever use it early morning or late evening but thats just me. Suppose it comes down to the consideration of the owner.

Also I have a Legacy for everyday use.

Another loud one here, but its not my DD(a Subaru Impreza) so rarely started before 09.30am or out at night.
Subaru only needs to be idled for a few minutes before switching off if its been driven hard immediately beforehand, otherwise its OK to switch off straight away. If he was being decent about it he would barely get above an idle when pulling out of his street, the noise levels then should be barely above std.
A quiet word might do the trick unless the guy is a total knob.

Is it revving the engine or just tickover that's noisy on the OP's case?
A neighbour in my previous house had an incredibly loud classic Impreza turbo, very nice car but a bloody annoying exhaust. It wasn't the outright volume, it was the throbbing/deep bass it seemed to produce, just a characteristic of the engine I guess. Problem was he owned a shop and was up and away at silly-o'clock most mornings and it was a PITA, although he did apologise to us all for it.

Thanks to above link, very interesting, but confusing reading.
Ally, you have hit the nail on the head and described it in words that I just couldn't find. Its the bass, the vibration etc as opposed to revving.
Its the old story that once you are aware of a sound or noise, the more you try and ignore it, the worse it gets. I can hear him entering the estate as the sound gets louder until it passes my house and then sits idling for a couple of minutes before switching off.
This is the second Scooby he had, the last one did something similar and , in fact, one day I passed in the morning and he was sitting in the car, with the engine running, living room blinds open fully and watching his TV from the car!
But just when that was really getting beyond a joke he chopped it in for a BMW convertible that was so not tuned or modded so peaceful again.
But then a few weeks ago another Scooby appeared...

Mate of mines had the police sitting at the end of his road with a noise measurer type thing. Happened after the neighbours complained when he started it every morning just after 6.
First set of cops were decent blokes and just told him to poodle out of the street. A month later same thing again resulted in report to pf and it looks like he might be getting a shiney new badge for A S ubaru B elting O ut.
Talk to the guy, I'm sure if he is made aware its actually disturbing people he will try and cool it a bit.

i was under the impression that gentle driving was the best way of warming up and engine. Not sure if thats the case for turbo cars tho. Slight reving, ie gentre driving will increse oil pressure on startup helping lubricate the engine?
surely if he's driven gently into the estate he doesnt need to have the turbo timer left on very long.
Im lucky enough to have 3 neighbours, a drummer, a terrible trumbone player, and a mad noisy dog owner. I can get away with anything with pretty much no complaints. (well apart from one time when i was cutting some metal at 7.30pm and my neighbour came round to complain about the noise. I reminded him he had a dog that barked at 12pm and woke me up reguarly barking at 6am and that it goes apes
t everytime i go out my back door into the garden. Not heard from him again since

Hi. Also a member of the noisy club. ( Tvr cerbera 4.5v8 and ex aston v8 ) Its down to the person / owner. My neighbours regularely ask if my car is broke again coz i push it in and out to wash rather than starting it unnecessarily. He probably sits in it and thinks it sounds amazing. A nice word in his ear. If he tells you to f@@k off, try a baked potato up his exhaust. Lol.

Yup me and the big brother - criminals!!! lol
In progress sir, in progress. Having a small problem with the minor detail I texted you about. Finding it hard to get round it so may have to move on and let yet another one pass me by! See what happens when I hear back next week.
Will keep you posted fella!
(OP - sorry for yet another thread hijack!)

If the Scooby owners wife is a cop, why not complain to the local BiB Internal Affairs department that one of their finest is causing a nuisance with her car?
Personally, I don't mind noisy exhausts out on the open road - but in a housing estate when the little 'un (and me) is trying to sleep, then my tolerance wears a bit thin.
You could always try some expanding foam.... 5 second squirt at 10pm will set rock solid by 3am...........
