I am not having a pop at the OP but these Ring times are really starting to irritate me. It is as much for the bragging rights amongst manufacturers and has no real relevance for the likes of those who will be buying these products, does it?
If it's a record or not maybe doesn't matter for the buyer. But I think it's very relevant to test a car like the Ultima on Nurburgring. If it performs great there then you know that it will handle most roads and tracks in a great way. I woulden't mind if people on the street said "wow that's an Ultima GTR, it's the fastest car around nurburgring" when I pass on the street. Now they say "whats that"

Funny you should say that but I have had a very fast PAX lap in a GTR with a ring veteran of more than 10 years visiting the place and although no records were set or broken it was indeed an amazing experience, but that was not my point.It is difficult to convey ones sentiment sometimes when contributing to such a thread as this and to offer an alternative view point often comes across as condescending or arrogant - it is not meant to be, it is just how I see it.

What other "benchmark" do you propose? One that stresses the car&driver to the max.I am not having a pop at the OP but these Ring times are really starting to irritate me. A time that has been achieved by a professional driver trying to squeeze every available ounce of performance from a car that at any given particular time in history could be be the fastest car of its type over a measured distance and terrain; no stress there then 'eh 
It may well be some kind of bench mark to another driver of similar ability ( or moreover to other manufacturers ) but I don't see that it makes any real difference to the potential buying public as there are not many of us that will ever be ( or even be capable of ) driving the car in replicated conditions. I regard it to be akin to the TG track myself. A bit of fun maybe but the accumulated data not being of any particular use out on the road. No one will buy a vehicle purely based on it's best time going round in a circle nor vice verse so this situation as I see it is willy waving amongst manufacturers but I suppose that if it gets folk talking it is in effect doing some kind of PR job if nothing else.
