Looking for new tyres, Ive not long had my Rockhopper and the back tyre is just about bald. Whats the best out there for mainly off road?

Cheers Adam

I'll be interested to hear the outcome of this as I'm on the lookout too. Have found some Continentals on CRC that seem good value and are rated well.

Was personally thinking about the Gravity 2.3s at £12.99 each, here:

The Gravitys are heavy tyres (good name for them), if you want cheap trail tyres, maybe look at the Explorers or Mountain Kings?

Ok, on that basis, I've just ordered a pair of Mountain Kings (2.4 wire bead, just like that hehe)

I'll let you know what they're like!

I changed to Panaracer Trailraker's after doing a lot of research last year, all I can say is that they are brilliant. They are a bit draggy on hardpacked surfaces but have lots & lots of grip on the wet stuff

Depends what you mean by "off road", what works well for autumn/winter bridleway riding might be very slow on nice hard packed trails. Or if you are hammering rock gardens you might need to go pretty big. What are you planning on riding?

Recently I've been using Bontrager tyres, the Jones XR are very good on hardpacked trails but rubbish if it gets slippery, the Jones ACX seem like a good allrounder and surprisingly good in mud for a 2.35, although they are "squirmy" on rock and tarmac. My friend has just changed the factory fits on his Zesty (Conti Race King IIRC) as they lasted half a lap of Climach-X before ripping a sidewall...he's got Maxxis High Rollers and likes them.

depends on the weather really, in the dry, speed kings or racing ralphs are hard to beat.

most people i know run panaracer fires as a compromise though, i have maxxis larsens on at the moment as thats what the bike came with and they were very good around coed y brenin. seen a few people with the kenda tomacs on recently too...

What's the general consensus on running different tyres front and back?

Cube do it on their bikes, using Nobby Nics or Rocket Rons on front and Racing Ralphs on the rear.

I like to have a grippier (softer compound) on the front and a more directional, slightly squarer profile harder compound tyre on the rear.

My bike came with Hutchisons, but all advice was to ditch them...I did after one ride.. yuck I changed to Conti Verti Pros, they're decent for most things but wet roots are just horrific and had one really bad 'off'. They're getting chucked and I've just ordered Maxxis high Rollers in 2.35 LUST's, all accounts for them in the super-sticky 42a compound have been great.

I'd have said go slightly narrower on the back.

I have a 2.1 HiRoller on the back and a 2.3 Minion on the front of the Mojo - works a treat with plenty of grip to stop front end wahouts plus the back isn't so wide that it doens't dig in to the dirt and grip.

Done me fine through last winter and all this year.
