I was quite impressed/depressed too! Got out into the garage, thought, 'Right, not going to mess with me this morning', give a give push on the breaker bar and 'crack'.

Dare I ask how you broke it?

Socket extension bar was through one of the holes in the pulley to stop the engine turning over. Eventually caused one of the webs between two holes to break off.

Even the tool that I made, with two steel pins to go through the pulley holes, the pins were bent in the process of removing the bolt! Have had it off subsequently and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the first time.

they are very week, i chipped the edges off mine smacking it with a rubber mallet trying to get it off.

in the end i bought a hub puller (3 leg 4inch reach i think) from machine mart £12 in the reduced return isle, it came with no box, but it got the pulley off and the crank sleeve off with ease.

I haven't even got that far plum! lol Still need to undo the bolt. Am hoping that once I've got the engine out I can use a combination of swear words, blood and a big airgun, maybe a big blow torch too.

have you put it in gear, made sure the back wheels are on the ground to create more resistance, lock the pulley in with a socket extension bar through one of the remaining holes in the pulley whcih isn't broke and the shock it. i used a scaffolding tube over my rachet/spanner (cant remember what i used now) and then whacked it with a hammer, it did crack loose.

if that fails bring out the heat and the above and it has to come off.

The rear wheels are off the ground currently as I'm rebuilding the brakes, hence why I was only able to use the socket extension bar. I was using a 1' breaker bar, plus a 1.5' scaffold pole over that. I was nearly climbing up the wall whilst pushing on it to try and break it free! laugh

if the brakes are built then get some one in the car to stamp on the stop pedal and put it in gear.

That's the next problem. Whilst rebuilding the rear calipers one of the bleed nipples snapped off! laugh

Did I mention the dropped spacer in the engine? biggrin Hence the reason why the engine is coming out! Almost certain now that the car won't see a piece of tarmac in 2009, and that I'll just go straight from here to do a full rebuild now. Was hoping to do a quick brake overhaul and change of cam in time for a 'Ring trip in a couple of weeks but it's just not going to happen! frown

James do you need a spare one? I am sure I have on kicking around. I will try and remember to look tonight when I get home.

Found one, it is off a 4.5 front caliper. Is that ok? If it is pm your address and I will send it to you tomorrow.
