Why do people do this? Are they worried about people cloning their vehicle?

I believe that's the reason.

On rare ish cars like TVR's, where they can't find one on the net that's the same colour, I don't think you need to be quite as concious of it.

However, there's a Red Hyundai Coupe driving around here committing various crimes, and sporting different plates each week. I'd guess they're looking on the various classified sites & just picking a car, the same colour/year & using it's plates.

Must be a bit of a nause for the legal owner of the plate, with the various knocks on the door, speeding tickets etc

All IMO of course smile

ETA.. Getting Four blokes with baseball bats getting in to any TVR quickly, isn't going to be an easy task. It's ability to mount kerbs & traverse speed bumps at 60 mph, wouldn't make it the ideal choice either.

I had a bike cloned - first hint was someone asking the DVLA for my V5C. Then came a PCN a few months later for a speed camera 150 miles away. Police reliased it wasn't me, when they found a lorry with a bike and rider stuffed in the front grill of it matched the photo from the speed camera.

So, why make it wasy for someone...?

yes

I think this is a big concern, you'll often see number plates taped over now by the owners, save the risk it being on a forum somewhere

Also used for entering the congestion charge zones in London as well aren't they?

Though ripping them off the car and sticking them on the other one is also a chosen method I believe... which my brother found out when someone tried it (and failed) and left his plate in front of the car in bits!

The DVLA will send you details of the car and where its kept for a fee if you can convince them you need to find out, which probably isnt all that difficult given they make money from it. Not really an issue with my Puma but Id imagine if you had a carrera GT then that might be somewhat different.

I think that this is the real reason, aparently the DVLA will provide you with the registered keepers details if you pay a fee for a reason you could just make up, e.g. this car is illegaly parked on private land, etc - then the toerags know your home address and where the car is possibly parked.

So much for data protection, huh
