In the supermarket last night there was a 'NEW' 50cl sized wine bottle on the shelf with a helpful label on it.

The tag said 'Just the right size for two to share' - Drink Aware

What a load of bks. Surely it is about the right size for one to have as an aperitif before opening a proper sized bottle.

Nowhere near getting you five a day in with one large glass of wine.

Yet try getting a 'proper' (37.5cl) half bottle of anything decent. Can't be done, unless you want dessert wine.

70cl is and will always be the benchmark for me. Anything less is pointless.

70cl isn't quite enough, so 2 bottles it is.

Stupid, stupid idea...

Poncy marketing blurb

poncy new world brand said:
Chile/UK: Chilean wine producer Concha y Toro has launched its Casillero del Diablo brand in 50cl bottles. Targeted at the multiple and convenience channels as well as the on-trade, the new format has an RRP of £4.99, and includes the 2008 Sauvignon Blanc and 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon.

The new 50cl bottle has been developed to target the convenience market and offer the trade a more expansive solution to its customers’ needs.

Casillero del Diablo has targeted the UK market with the new format to offer premium wine for less investment and reduced risk, and ultimately recruit new customers to the brand.

Jason Duggan, head of marketing for Concha y Toro, said: “At a time when choice is so important to the trade, we can offer them an expansive and innovative solution that will in turn give their customers the options they desire – the 50cl bottle satisfies the convenience market, encourages responsible drinking through portion control and offers premium wine at a more affordable price. It is a format that we think is right for the market and right for our customers."

The product will eventually roll out across mainland Europe.
Reduced risk?!?!?!

In that they're only blowing £4.99 in trying the wine and that there isn't much to drink/waste if they don't like it.

Isn't this like the recently-seen popularity of the 600g loaf of bread? A smaller size but priced similarly to a larger size, thus allowing a creeping increase in price without the customer noticing it?

(Although I can't believe that reducing the amount of wine in the bottle by 25cl will make much difference. A large chunk of the price of any bottle of wine comprises of the tax, bottle, cork, filling and handling processes and shipping, particularly when shipped from S America. I'd have thought that the cost of the contents is small compared with these.)

yes

Noticed some supermarkets downsizing their canned pulses range from 400g to 300g, but dropping the price by a few pennies to hit the right price point.... It would be that northern chain, that took over "Dangerways" or something like that...

Do you live in the 1970s? It's 75cl these days. Enjoy those extra 5cl!

Interesting ... I first spotted it (consciously) in the one that sounds like a nordic country mid-way between us and the US with a load of busted banks. *

as someone in the industry, the 50cl is an interesting prospect.

I understand the concept behind it, and lets face it, we are not going to see £9.99 (for 75cl) wine in it, it will be the cheap stuff, sub £5 level. It is not those who appreciate wine that it is aimed at, rather those who fancy some wine but are unlikely to get through a whole bottle. It could encourage more responsible drinking.

50cl is the recommended daily allowance for two people apparently.

Dear All,

you just know it is complete rubbish when the phrase "more expansive solution to its customers’ needs" appears in any text. Although fair play to the correct apostrophe,

regards,
Jet

Excellent. I always knew that a bit of binge drinking was a good thing. Sounds like I 'binge drunk' last night, and the night before, and the night before that as well. (Which means it's regular, and therefore probably not 'bingeing', eh?)

To be fair, the only reason the supermarkets will do it is 1) if they are pushed to do it by government bodies, 2) meet stringent recycling targets under the Courtald Agreement (less weight in 50cl bottles than 75cl) and 3) margins will be by portion higher, as per cl, the price point will be higher, despite filling, packaging costs being the same, with distribution costs being marginally lower.
