So as I was rather desperate for a job recently on a temporary basis before I go away (hate sitting around on my arse and money is always useful) I looked into doing some temporary attendant/security/general busybody stuff at a local casino. I started today..the normal hours are 9am to 12pm (yes, midnight), with two one hour breaks meaning I'd be working 13 hour days, 6 days a week. Did a 'half' day today (9am to 4pm) to 'ease' me in! I knew the job was a lot of hours but not quite that much. Anyway, that's not the bone of contention.
I've been asked to sign a contract stating that my job will include overtime at no extra rate. All the jobs I've ever had paid 1.5x pay after 37.5hrs a week. The other guys doing my sort of job have signed this, basically because they need the job and if they don't do it someone else will, especially in this area.
So the long and short of it is I'm expected to work 78 hour week x normal wage instead of (37.5 x 1) and (40.5 x 1.5) which is what I thought the deal would be. I'm happy to do the hours, just not sure if I could hack them all with no overtime, as it's 'part of the job', unlike your normal office job. The wage is shocking anyway, but what can I expect on such a short term temporary basis. I know I could do it, but those hours at minimum wage would be absolute hell.
Remember there's tons of others that will take the job if I don't as it's basically donkey work.
Do I sell my life for a month, sign the contract, get my head down, do the hours and shut up as I could do with the money..it's only for 4 weeks after all.. or tell them to stick it, they are taking their employees for a ride..?

Well that's up to you!
If they can comfortably fill the job paying minimum wage, what incentive do they have to pay overtime?
No incentive. I can see their point. Slave labour and all that If they can comfortably fill the job paying minimum wage, what incentive do they have to pay overtime?

Are jobs allowed to have basic contracted hours in excess of 48 anymore?
It is averaged over a 17 week period. If the op is only doing 4 weeks there it wont be an issue. The basic rights and protections that the Working Time Regulations provide are:
a limit of an average of 48 hours a week which a worker can be required to work (though workers can choose to work more if they want to).
a limit of an average of 8 hours work in 24 which nightworkers can be required to work.
a right for night workers to receive free health assessments.
a right to 11 hours rest a day.
a right to a day off each week.
a right to an in-work rest break if the working day is longer than 6 hours.
a right to 4 weeks paid leave per year.
You can sign an opt out of the 48 hour rule, and this is probably in your contract somewhere.
Its perfectly normal, infact out of all my previous jobs, 3, which all asked you to sign the 45 hour waver none of them offered overtime.
You are signing the waver because its a long hours job, its not a 37 hour job, where you might work more, its a job where you will never work 37 hours and always work more.

Only just read this thread.
OP, how do you feel?
How is it effecting you eating, sleep and PH's contribution?
I'm reading a book about a group of pastposters in casinos. Anyway, apparently the staff (granted the dealers and pit staff) get a lot of tips in the way of chips.
This could explain why employees of casinos accept such a low salary.

I've just done a 76 hour week (Friday to Friday). I'm very tired (as you'd expect). I nearly fell asleep driving this morning. I'm going to bed as soon as I get home (12.30) and waking up as late as possible (7.45). My PH contribution is .. well this is the first in a week. OP, how do you feel?

Fair point about the tips, but this is definitely pit staff only, I don't see any of those. For my troubles I've earnt 76hrs x £5.73 = £435 minus tax, NI etc, leaves me with about £350 take home. Remember though, I have literally no life outside of that place. Some of the guys go for a drink after til 2-2.30 - they must be hardcore b

I worked
8-8 5 days a week and 9-5 Saturday every other week.
So that means and average of 64 hour weeks. I did that for a year, and like you said, as soon as it got dark I felt like I was going to fall asleep at the wheel. Its not healthy, and in your case not worth it either. So I sympathise.
If its any consolation I now do 37 hour weeks, and I am still as tired on a friday morning

Its unpaid overtime that is pissing me off at the moment. In a way I am in a similar position to the OP, I'm currently working in retail, hoping it won't be for ever, have several applications on the go, just hoping one comes good, but in the mean time its work and not to be sniffed at.
I'm just really pissed off that I seem to be doing so much overtime for which I'm just not paid. I am paid till 5.30 when the shop closes, but then I am expected to stay on to cash up, and tidy up meaning I a not leaving the store till 6pm. When a delivery arrives early someone has to be there at 8 but pay doesn't start till 8.45 when the store opens. This week I have only had one lunch break the entire week as the company won't employ enough people to cover lunches. All this for minimum wage, and it has been made clear than no-one is safe so keep your head down.
