Bank Holiday Airport Strikes - Gatwick
Discussion
I hear there are meant to be strikes with the baggage handling staff at Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted over the bank holiday, I'm due to fly out from Gatwick at 8pm on the Saturday 29th.
I have never travelled during strikes before and never over a bank holiday so what am I likely to expect if teh strike goes ahead? Does it just tend to delay things or do flights actually get cancelled or just delayed? Should I look at trying to get a earlier flight out there ? ( would have to throw a sickie/unpaid so not ideal).
Surely they must have another firm or contractors that can come in and cover these greedy b
ds ?

I got a 15% payCUT! last month but our staff don't all kick up a fuss and threaten to quit we are just glad we have a f

Also even when they decide to do their job they tend to do a s

Baggage handling is done by different handling agencies at Gatwick. Are you sure your flight is with an airline that is using a handling agent that is striking?
Your airline will probably do it's upmost to get flights away on time. I've even seen airline employees doing the baggage loading during contracted handling agents strikes.

Im flying with a cheapie Thompson, so would guess these use a contractor/agency to do their baggage
The bad news is Thomson use Swissport in Gatwick who appear to be the handlers threatening to strike on that day.The good news is they were the airline I saw having airline employees coming in to load the bags themselves try to avoid delays.
Is the strike still going ahead?

Seems like they are going ahead with the strikes....

I might turn up to the airport an hour early and load my own f
king bags!
They seriously are'nt helping their chances of keeping their job by striking, I say axe them all there would be 10,000's of people willing to take their jobs for less money than they are currently getting paid!

Virtually all airlines use these handling agents these days. In fact I think BA is the only company not to.
It appears the swissport 'strike' is not actually a strike but a work to rule. It is allegedly over the company not paying an agreed pay rise. So there will be people working, loading bags etc just slower than their usual slow pace
If you look out the window when waiting at the departure gate and you see someone inspecting a baggage loading vehicle or refusing to drive one that is missing a mirror, then that's what's going on.

Still can't believe they would get away with it!
If I decided to work slower after not getting an agreed payrise I would be out the door the same day
They're ' working to rule ' which appears to be doing their job and following all the rules and regulations exactly, I doubt they can get sacked for that. If I decided to work slower after not getting an agreed payrise I would be out the door the same day

So is this definitely the case then ? As everywhere I look seems to just mention strikes ? Rather than this 'working to rule' shizz
Gatwick Airport can confirm that the planned industrial action by Swissport staff on Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August has been postponed. All flights are expected to operate as normal during this period.
