As the title says.

I want access to some good basic kit, like olympic bars, racks etc. Want it rough and ready and hopefully cheap!

Any suggestions...?

There is a gym at Oakdene Forest Park off the A31 near St. Leonards Hospital. Never seen it busy there (2 or 3 people using it at most). You need to become a member.

See http://www.shorefield.co.uk/heathandfitness-oakden...

Prices here http://www.shorefield.co.uk/Uploads/Oakdene%20Leis...

Pretty sure that the David Lloyd is tarty and machine driven, rather than free weights.

The Oakdene one - looked at that some while ago but can't remebre being impressed. It's a holiday home, isn't it? SO can get busy during summer I guess. Also, it doesn't make it clear if they have decent free weights there.

However - worth a call!

Cheers.

And according to a friend of mine who goes, it's £60/month!!
I don't know what she gets for that (to be honest for £60/month, I'd expect the weights to be lifted for me! wink ) but it does seem pretty pricey!

yes

She said they rather have you over a barrel in the area because for what she wants, she'd need to go to Bournemouth...

How about the Fitness First in Bournemouth just by Queens Park? It was the very first fitness first to be opened so to be honest some of the equipment in there is pretty old skool!! Despite the newer "wheels and pully" type machines they still have a pretty good selection of free weights.

If your quick they are also currently doing a deal with no joining fee etc and a cut down rate of around £25 a month which isnt too bad as you can then use any of the clubs around the country.

used littledown's big gym back in 03/04 and was £35/mth then. Has a large free weights room and good allround atmosphere. been using the talbot uni campus gym for last 3 years (which has all i need + a free weights room) mainly because they never check membership cards & low cost - 2yrs and counting on a single year's membership of £100 so far... and it is very rarely crowded... but unfortunately very few fit uni chicks use it frown
then for super cheap there's the one under asda - town centre - @ £15/mth?...payg too...but when i checked it out it was a total sweat box - very crowded
