Or alternatively do the Hinds Head for Lunch, The Fat Duck for dinner and get a car to take you from Bray to the Oakley Court Hotel which is 5 minutes away.

Auberge du Lac at Brocket Hall - Phil Thompson got his first Michelin Star this year. Terrific.

The Alpine is very good in Bushey,
The Grove also has two very good restaurants (The Glass House and Colette's).

The Bean Tree in Harpenden. Understated but high quality

Good suggestions so far... OP: any preferences in cuisine?

Auberge du lac is very good - but watch the bill - last time I went I got caught for a huge service charge ( I think it was about £40.00 on a £200.00 bill for two)

Cheers chaps, I'm going to give the bean tree a try - obviously I wasn't swung by it being the closest hehe

They used to do some quite pleasant jazz evenings, but can't remember if they were Thursday. Also - check out the 'bin ends' wine list. They are the owner's wines - some pretty rare stuff occasionally

I had a look at the wine list the other day really quite impressive. Had a nice selection of Chablis'.

Did the Bean Tree, and aside from not being able to find it (one small sign out front and a cabbie with no clue where to look) I have to say I was really impressed. The food was great and the selection of wine was fairly impressive.

Thanks for the recommendation, and I'd definitely suggest it's worth a go.

Glad you enjoyed it (I did say understated, but agree they could do a little more to say where they are!)
