I have a Hotpoint washer/dryer (Yes, I know they're ste), which I've owned for about 2yrs.

It appears to have developed a very annoying habit of depositing what I can only describe as a white, possibly powdery, residue on washing- It seems to rub out almost whilst wet but looks terrible when dried.

Any ideas? I have a descaler on the main supply, and use washing tablets...

Could it be poor rinsing - ie washing powder residue?

Not a bad shout... I don't think it's limescale- But what would cause it and how do I fix it? smile

If the machine has a filter, check to see if it has a partial blockage.

I'd love to check the filter- But as far as I know it doesn't have a "User servicable" filter- As far as it says in the handbook. And where you'd normally have the access door on the front, there's a red blanking plate...

AFIK the white residue is detergent. I would guess that the reason why it is staying on the clothes is that either you are using too much or the drain is partially blocked so that the out flow is too slow.

Start by changing to a liquid detergent in the drum rather than the drawer and start at half the quantity.

Within a few washes the white powder should go.

Next check the trap that it discharges into and then the grey pipe for constrictions.



Bear in mind that washing is strictly Mrs C's department mind!

I have had this happen before and I believe it occurs when the machine is overloaded and therefore the clothes don't rinse properly.
As an aside,I have owned a number of washing mashines from Bosch to Hotpoint and the Hotpoint has definitely been the best.

Don't know myself but her indoors thinks you're not washing with the temp high enough.
