Does anyone believe there are any gains from running Super Unleaded instead of normal unleaded ? Have only stuck to the normal stuff as recommended in the manual, anyone do any different, one Super to every 3 normal etc? Will running Super do any damage?

Any Thoughts?

If you get a scan gauge your see if you get any engine knock, its deffently for supercharged cars if you want power but I can run mine on 95 (its running on it at the moment) but if I got WOT in 6th i get knock (only minor) but then mines been mapped with the good stuff smile

i personally run v-power as my cars remapped so i thought it would run better than 95. Mines not supercharged, plus i do think the car runs smoother on v-power but that just might be me

Have had this discussion before - my car's standard - but I'm quite sure that it has noticeably more grunt if I use Tesco 99 RON. although others will tell you differently.

To put it in perspective, I was running it on 95 and at one point I started thinking that the performance had tailed off to the point where I was seriously looking at a dyno run just to find out. Couple of tankfuls of 99 later and the smile had returned to my face.

for me in Derby i have found shell v-power to be better than bp ultimate. The car seems to pop and bang more on v-power

The only difference between Vpower and sheel 97 super unleaded is that Vpower has an extra additive to reduce friction.

There are no differences between the detergents in all grades (95, 97, vpower) of shell petrol.

Remember that there are only a very small number of refineries in the UK so pretty much all 95/97 petrol comes from the same place. The big differences come in to things such as petrol station storage facilities and the age of the fuel. It is much better to buy from a busy station that turns over fuel quickly rather than have it sitting in the tanks. Early supermarket stations had bad reps as they were not properly sealed thus allowing water to seep into the tanks which causes havok however the new purpose built places are much better.

Vpower is exclusive to shell as is BP ultimate. I believe Tescos fuel is rebranded BP Ultimate but don't hold me to that.

The key difference is Tesco/BP is 5% bio ethanol where as (AFAIK) optimax is 0%. In theory the ethanol should help FI but it'll run slightly richer (about 2% I think)

For 90% of people 95 fuel is fine - sure, if you have a tuned setup, forced induction or often drive the car very hard then 97 and higher fuel would be recommended. However even with these setups a boring long drive up the motorway would make no difference to the fuel.

The only time I have ever felt a bigger difference is on Motorbikes to be honest, and thats because the engines are usually in a much higher state of tune than car engines.........you can really feel the difference between 95 and 98.

No you don't, it depends on how it's tuned. Mine will run happily on 95 unleaded if I have to.

Take a look at Thorney motorsport's web site.
They tested both tesco 99 and 95 octain in 2 different cars modded and standard, and clearly more torque and power is obtained from tesco 99,along with better mpg.

I cant understand how someone can spend so much time and money on there car but not put the best fuel in. I know as you say Wormus yours will run fine on 95 but given the choice would you not pick 97/99 Ron? Its a serious piece of kit you have therethumbup
Maybe its just me, and i know in comparison with you we've had only a small amount of mod's on our CV8 but both me and Col would rather travel to another station than put normal unleaded in the Monaro.

Ah, I didn't say I ran mine on 95 just that it would. I too use super juice because as you say I'd be stupid not to I was just pointing out that you don't have to just because you have FI.

been lots of discussion on here in the past re fuel and its not just the ron value you need to consider when choosing fuel. These 97/99 ron fuels go off much quicker so are only at their optimum for a short time. If you're buying them at stations where there isnt a high turnover of the "better" fuel then it could well be you end up with fuel thats gone off and would be better using the 95 stuff thats changed 2-3 times a week. You could end up paying 5-6p a litre more for poorer quality fuel......

my handbook says 95........i use 95. im also going to get ip mapped on 95.

fuel these days is riduclous. and i do a fair bit of milage, got fed up with the stuff when i had the skyline, because i had to put it in.

i can understand the s/c guys putting it in but stockish engines i really cant.

yes 99 etc may make 'throttle response' better. 1 more mpg per tank, and all that jazz. but its not like my stock cv8 is a high revving multivalvem, vvti, turbo, dohc vtec, engine. i think there's far too much hype over these 'super fuels' these days.

so ill stick to 95 and save some money.

As will they all, but which spark advance table do you want the ECU to read. High or low octane?

this could be why my car seems to run a bit better on vpower as the bp garage down the road from me is usually very quiet, and ive been a few times and they were sold out of ultimate. Shame there isnt a tesco nearby to try out 99
