Whats the Ferrari 355 like for running costs ?

Seen this...http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1174179.htm

My 911 cost me about £1200-£1500 (not including tyres) per year doing around 4-6,000 miles.

Thanks

10,000 miles in 4 months...clap

Anything to look out for ? (ie 911's have the rear main oil seal's etc..)

Is Shiltech a main dealer ?

I'd say double your 911 costs. Its an old car now the 355 and stuff will need doing from time to time.
£3000+ per year not including tyres.

Would this be the same on the 360 ?

The 'average' yearly costs at a specialist on any Fezza (355/360/456/550)is thought to be around £3000 unless something major needs doing.

My 360 is sligtly different as I've done 85,000 miles in mine over 7 years and obviously pads/discs/clutch/bushes/manifolds i.e. wear and tear items add up.
Costs for mine has been £4000-5000 average per year.
I don't think in essence there is much difference on a 355 v 360 other than cambelts being cheaper to change every 3 years.

How is the 355 as an everyday car with mixed driving, I mean for short trips a couple of miles down to the gym, taking my toddler to the park etc, driving around in London traffic. I will also be doing longish drives every couple of weekends (300-400miles).... my lotus if fine with the above will the 355 cope in the same way???

No, they're a very good independent based in Loughborough. My 348 is with them at the moment having an annual service and clutch release bearing replaced.

Geoff is an absolutely top bloke and has gone well beyond the call of duty several times for me. Can't praise them highly enough.

apologies for jumping in on this thread, but it's of a little bit of interest to me!

i currently run a porsche 996 C4S. I've only had it for 7 months and i adore it, but probably in about a year or so's time, i might want to change it for something a bit more exotic (all being well with the job and everything!), mainly because i'm a bit stupid and like spending money on cars that i should really use for other things.

the obvious choice for me is to simply chop my porker in/sell it privately, add £15k or so to the amount i get, and go on the hunt for a nice 996 turbo. rapid, useable, can take it on a track without fear of it going bang. BUT, being half italian, the lure of a fezza is ever present (despite the performance deficit against a turbo), and for that money (35-40k) i would appear to be able to get an F355 or at a stretch in a year or so, a 360.

the main issues for me would be running costs and potential one off expensive bills. i always hear £1.5-2k per year, with a slush fund of a similar amount for unforseen dramatic extras, for a regular 996 doing say 10k miles per year. although there is a lot of scare mongering about RMS failures etc, by and large, they are v reliable. so a turbo is only going to cost me a bit more.

how would an F355/360 stack up against those costs? i'd only do about 6-8k miles in it per year as i would get something tiny and cheap for really mundane stuff, but the idea would def be to use it as often as possible. and because i live in london it *will* be kept on the road (although people where i live are pretty good with their parking by and large)

prices to compare to for my 996 from a regular not cheap cheap indy:

front pads/discs = £500 (just pads, £250)
rear " " = £400 (hope to learn how to do all these myself though to save labour costs)
tyres = £450 for rears, £350 for fronts, seem to last about 10k mies with me despite track days!
insurance = £800 per annum (i get a cracking deal even though i'm only 27! biggrin )

for the record, i used to have a maser 4200 CC, and sold it after 9 months of trouble free motoring because a) i missed a manual car, b) GTs are really my type of thing it turns out, c) ridiculous fuel consumption, 15mpg (i average high 20s in the porker), and finally d) i was convinced that if i even took it within 10 miles of a track it would spontaneously fall apart.

anyway wisdom much appreciated, especially from those who have maybe been in a situation like mine!

With the 355 it all depends on what condition it is in when you buy it, how many miles you do and how you treat it. I had a 355 Berlinetta for 6 mths, used it every day for work and it cost me nothing in that time. I had a 355 Spider two ish years but didnt do much mileage in it. During that time it cost me a main service and belts which from memory was £1000 and tyres £600. So all in £1600 for two years driving.

I always use indys to service (Grimaldi) which is considerably cheaper and in my opinion a better quality of service.

Then other owners have owned them a short time and it has cost them a fortune. Buy a bad one and it will cost you a fortune!! Get a good inspection done on the car and treat it right. The rest is up to luck.

As chris says buy a good one to start with and all will be ok buy a bad one and spend loads seems to be the way with the 355.

Mine ( chris's old spider) has only needed two services £500 ish each ( both by qv london) and a new set of hand brake shoes ( about £200 fitted) in the last 18 months since I bought it.

It had a massive inspection when I bought it, something like 6 hours and 5 pages of info which was all good, still my favourite car of all time .. just need to use it more

well, technically i haven't had it a year yet, so i could be talking arse wink but on a serious note, it would seem that £2k per year is about the going rate for a 'normal' 911 i.e. not a turbo/GT3 etc. obviously this doesn't include insurance and fuel, and assumes all the work is done at an indy. since i aim to use it properly and continue doing track days, personally i want to be able to do change pads and discs myself to reduce the costs more

really? i would have thought a rear engined 911 is more scary! the first couple of times i kept the PSM switched firmly on, then tried ot off. i span twice, but at bedford there's nothing to hit and i never even left the tarmac! and it was only because i went into a corner too fast! i reckon that if you keep traction/stability control switched on, remember the mantra "slow in, fast out" you'll be fine biggrin

otherwise, where are you remotely going to be able to safely explore the handling limits of your car?!
