BMW E46 6K Suggestions

I am looking at a new car, and I think I have decided on an E46.
I have a max of 6K to sepnd (but ideally up to 5K)
I do about 20K a year so fuel consumption is a factor.
My ideal scenario (based on my research) would be a 330i sport with black leather, not bothered saloon/coupe or touring, but obviosuly the fuel element is worrying me. 330D also looks a favourite.

would love to hear your views, experiences, advice etc.
