Have a 2001 XKR Convertible and the last couple of days the locking seems to be behaving oddly. When I press the unlock button on the remote the locking system seems to lock and unlock three or four times at one second intervals before then settling at unlocked. On eone occasion I could then not relock the car except by putting the key in the ignition, firing up briefly and then turning off. Then the car locked normally.

Seems bizarre, anyone else experienced issues with this ?

Thanks in anticipation

Thanks. Car gets used pretty infrequently nowadays, always starts fine so that probably gives me a false sense of security. I'll try leaving it on the trickle charger when it's in the garage and see if that cures the problem

If the car's and the remote's batteries prove to be ok then try resetting the door through the drivers door power windows.
Hold the window switch down until the window lowers and you hear a loud click from behind the switch, do the same going up and Robert is your mother's brother bounce

Griff,

Bet that is your problem yes These cars seem to be very sensitive to small voltage drops that effect electrics but not the overall start sequence - hence the problem gets hidden. Make sure battery has a proper check to see if it is ok as trickle charge may not recover to full power.

...get out and drive it man!! hehe

Thanks officer, will endeavour to use it more but it has competition for my attention. My son has offered to take it for a regular spin on my behalf; he's 19 so the insurance will probably give me a nosebleed yikes

Battery is relatively new, about a year I think, but I guess standing a week or more between drives can quickly take its toll.

Thanks Paul, could you please be a bit more specific. That sounds mechanical whereas the symptom appears to be more electronic. And if it's a latch would it be a problem both sides of the car ?

The latch assembly, while mechanical, contains all the micro switches and motors etc that operate and control the central locking. The symptoms you have (locks bouncing) are caused by one latch sticking (failed motor within the latch usually)

The other (good) side opens, but then seeing the other side didnt open, the good side closes again to match, then its gets all confused and opens and closes and opens and closes, I never figured out why this happens, but thats what happens when you get latch failure. The motors and switches etc are not available seperatly so its a new latch assy required. £100 or so + an hour to fit.

The hard part is knowing which side is at fault, If your lucky, you can look in the window when it fails and see which one cycles back and forth and which one stays still.

Its common on the earlier XK's, have done load of them.

On the X300 fractionally low battery voltage seems to do this.

Hasn't got the power to move the (intermittently) sticking motor, with a few more volts in the bank, manages to get it going.

Sounds possible to me. Back when my car had a Jaguar warrantee the local dealer used to spend many a happy hour try to work out why. Gave them something to do while the car was in for a service.

Great, thanks for the help. Going in for service in a couple of weeks so I'll get them to check it out when it's in. Of course at the moment it's taken to behaving itself again.
