Hello Folks, I have a clutch problem and, after doing a lot of searching through previous threads, I seem to have confusing symptoms. The good news (I hope) is that I definitely do not have a leak inside or out.

However (1), the clutch has stopped having any feel for the first 2 inches or so and only just engages with foot pressed right to the floor. Previous threads suggested a broken return spring in the master cylinder; upon changing the cylinder people have reported problem solved. Ok so far.

However (2), the fluid is contaminated with black deposits/gunge which threads suggest is the seals going. Would these seals be the seals in the master cylinder or could fluid get pumped around the system and it be the slave seals? Other threads suggest that I would end up with a leak if the seals go but there is no indication of this and the master cylinder has always remained full.

This is why I am a little confused.

Is my best course of action replace the master cylinder and see what happens (cus it's easier, cheaper and I can do it myself), or am I going to end up doing the slave anyway at some point in the near future, in which case I'll probably just book it in and get the whole lot done????

TTFN

Flash - Black gunge in the bottom does suggest it may be seals. The forst thing I would do is buy a litre of clutch fluid and flush through the fluid, and see what happens.

If the slave seals have failed, it will lose fluid. If the master seals have failed it may lose fluid but may not, depending whether it's the outer seal which has gone.
