Greetings all.

Having a bit of a bad couple of weeks and need some advise on a replacement car after a nice woman drove into the back of me whilst she was on the phone.

I'm looking at buying a BMW estate and have always loved the 330 engine and am now looking at having a little more space to move my tools around and keep the dog happy in the back.

I've seen this for sale on PH classifieds and was wondering if there is anything that I should be looking for and also your general experience of these cars.
I'm a little concerned about the mileage at 99,894 miles.

looks like a decent car.. shame no leather... my 330i touring is an SE and on the same mileage now, they drive well if looked after.... main thing to look for is the front bushes, you should be able to spot any problems on the test drive

aaaarrrrggghhh! another person who considers this high mileage.

NOTE: High mileage on one of these is 150+ (probably even 200k+)

I have one of these in 5-series format. A 2000 530iA. Its fine. Nothing wrong with it and 149k.

I am not remotely worried about mileage. They are built to last, and yes things will go wrong, but its less than 2/3 through its useful life.

On a Fiesta that generally lasts to 100-120k yes its high miles. But a BMW that runs to 250k+ it is not.

I also have a 525i Touring with 229500 on the clock that runs fine, returns 33mpg and has no issues.

No, not another person that is worried by mileage just being a little curious. My old man has an old Merc that was left to him with 350,000 on the clock and the thing still fires up first time.
I'm more after some info on these cars, what to look for and servicing costs.
Thanks for the info, made my mind up, just need to wait for some cheques to come in.

It comes with Suede m-tec sports interior, never seen it before but guessing it attracts dog hair.

It is not Suede, but Alcantara, if it were suede there would not be a lot left of iot by now.

Not really with the dog hairs, well not as bad as velour/cloth although I not they are half cloth.

There is a detailer that runs around in a van that has Alcantara on the bonnet of his van.

Yes, on the outside.

I would take the alcantara over leather everytime, looks sporty, alot harder wearing than leather, doesn't get hot/cold like leather, you don't slide about on it and you don't have to spend time conditioning it.

Just look how good the alcantara looks compared with the leather on the steering wheel.

99k miles is nothing, however, you should consider that the bushes may need replacing, front wishbones are around £200 a pair, and the rear bushes will cost around £300 fitted for the lot, but should then feel like a new car.

I would happily buy a 330i with 99k miles on it, great cars, especially in touring guise.

I would jump at it if it has been well maintained. It looks like a facelift with the smile front indicaters so will have the little tweeks the facelift had.
I have a saloon B3s which is the same ish car and I love it. Go for it!

That silver one looks nice, just run in at that mileage, you'll find a lot of good info on these two sites.

http://www.e46zone.com/

http://www.bmwowner.com/forum/index.php?sid=878a2b...

although the second site is mainly for the E36 model they cover all models with a high E46 ownership level.

I appreciate these cars can go on for very high mileages but saying 'just run in' always sounds off to me.

100k is not high mileage on an almost 8 year old car. Mine had 140k on it when I bought it at 4 years old, THAT is high mileage wink

Another point I think puts people off is the value, it may still be worth a decent amount at £100k but what at £150k?

Or would you stand to lose more anyway if you'd bought it when it was worth more with lower miles?

I think I paid £8k for mine when a 40k mile 4 year old 530i Sport was about £15k.

I've done 30k miles.

Today, a 70k mile 530i Sport is worth what, 6-7k? tops? So even if mine gets thrown in the bin I've not lost out resale wise.

Absolutely horrible isn't it? I know some people don't care about keeping the engine bay clean and it doesn't necessarily mean the car is poorly maintained, but that would put me right off yuck

What would put me off is the strut brace and the //POWER badge. POWER? What?

This is what a properly looked after engine *should* look like at around 100k:

...and this one is around the same price albeit a coupe and not a touring.
