Rear tyres 285's ???
Discussion
Hi
A neighbour has a 40's Chevy pick-up, with 17" wheel, but has just got some nice new wheels from the States.
He wants to go up to 60 profile to better suit the look of the truck as the 40 profile just don't suit it.
So he offered me his old (almost new tyres) 235-40-17 fronts which will fit, but also some 285-40-17 for the rear.
Is there anyway these 285's will fit my standard RL 17's and under the Cerb skin??

They will fit but you'll need to rub down the arches, but 285 on an 8.5 rim is not recommended (assuming thats what your RL17 rim is), 20% oversize is generally ok as long as the profile caters for the fit. 275/40 is normally the extreme limit on 8.5J. So I'd say 285 on your rims will be pushing the optimal tyre fitment envelope over the scale a bit, and you dont really want to do that.... but try it if you think griding your arches out for a free pair of tyres is worth it...
oh and dont forget your contact patch will become more shorter vertically and obviously wider horizontally... and the car will be more susceptible to aquaplaning... with summer over, wont be fun on the wet roads...

I run 265's on 18's on the back on RL's and they rub more than my 265's on 19's (due to wheel offset I think.
285's is going to be a world of pain I suspect.
Recommended widths for a 285 section tyre is 9.5"-11"
Are the 17" RL's staggered widths front rear though? Mine are 9.5's on the 18's compared to 8.5's on the fronts.

Cheers lads!
Grind away me arches!!
I think I'll say no then!
They were on cheap offer, not free, so will stay as is.
Don't like the sound of the tyres not fitting the rims properly either!
I thought I'd read the PH advice was 265 about max, but worth asking.

Steve, it varies mate, depends on the stiffness of the walls, you can run some rare numbers sometimes... all depends on the tyres... general rule of thumb is if you have a bigger profile you can get away with slightly thinner rims...Grind away me arches!!
