how to make my girlfriend's 1.4 306 go faster!
Discussion
Speak to a guy on www.superturbonitrousballisti
ter306.co.uk, who's known as Bulls
t_Mike. He has little to do too, and starts loads of unimaginative threads like "how can I fit an Iveco Stralis turbo to my 106 diesel?" and "would removing the aircon compressor, power steering pump and alternator on my 406 1.8 16v and replacing them with superchargers with nuclear fusion power give me infinate horsepower?"
I think he's the man you're looking for fella!
He might also mention there are many 1.4 8v TU-powered cars out there in competition running a reliable 150bhp with natural aspiration. 150bhp in a 306 wouldn't be all that (the S16 is a bit s
te) but then a 1.4 is a bit small for a 306. It's like a 318i.

eh up - yeah i was being stupid early - genuinely though how effective would air filters and stuff be. The car was bought from auction and is a good runner but needs some tlc. Maybe the car was never supposed to be any quicker than it is, but it feels unbelievably slow. I used to have 1.25 zetec fiesta and i8t would have killed this thing. oh yeah - and whats TU?
Although there's clearly a lot of piss taking going on in this thread the tu engines respond very well to a decent induction kit, manifold and exhaust. I reckon if you combined that with a racier cam and a remap and you'd see well over 100hp, something like 120 at a guess?
But to be honest, all of it is a bit pointless in a big car like a 306 or ZX. Just go for one of the many XU engine options, 115, 130, 155, 160 or 167hp as standard

any ideas?
want to have some fun making it go a bit faster / more responsive.
was thinking air filter, exhaust, IDB's, fuel pump, polished and ported heads, high compression and racing stripes - aiming for about 290 bhp.
any advice appreciated
You could just buy this, i hear the seller's a total legend want to have some fun making it go a bit faster / more responsive.

If you want a cheap runaround, a ZX 1.4 is as good as any that cheap, but the brakes are horrible and it's very over-geared for the engine. Rides and handles well, but you'd be better off starting with a ZX 16v (if you can find one!) and fitting a Xsara VTS lump. That's 1100kg and 167bhp before you tinker with it (180bhp easily achievable). But the suspension and brakes will be able to handle it at least

Good luck finding a ZX 16v! I'd love one for the sheer cheapness/sleeperness of a fast ZX, but when they're rarer than hen's teeth you're much better just going for a 306 S16 given the price of them nowadays.

H'm, I'm quite familiar with this particular ZX as I did about 75,000 miles in it.
Just wondering if it could become a low/no-cost 'starter' track hack with some head work & ITBs & all. After all the thing only weighs about 100 kgs more than a 205/106/Saxo thingy (before stripping) while being infinitely stiffer. I'd say about 120 bhp would do nicely.
That sounds awfully light for a ZX given how heavy the 306s are? Anyway, rather than ITBs spend the money on at least a 16v TU (16v XU would be much better imo) and suspension/braking upgrades.
But then if you're spending that much money you may as well buy a 306 S16.

Yep, there's a whole 100-150 kg between both. 0-62 of a ZX 1.4: 12.9s, Pug 306 1.4: 15.4s (both 3-dr, both observed by AutoWeek magazine).number2301 said:

If you're on the Island of Dirt Cheap Secondhand Cars and have to pay retail for parts and upgrades, yes - OTOH I'd have better use for 4-5 grand than to buy a 306 GTI here.

An induction kit on its own wont do much to an engine like that. Spend your money on a decent BMC filter, make sure you have the cold air feeds, then get a correctly sized Manifold, Cat and back custom pipe, the more chrome the faster you go! for added speed you could try adding plywood wings to the boot known as "spoilers"
