painting alloys?
Discussion
I've acquired a second set of wheels to use for trackdays (they have v.worn tyres on
). I was thinking of painting them black as I have a black Cerb. If they look great, I'll swap the tyres over. If they look crap, no big loss.
Is it possible to just paint alloys with spray paint? Would I need to acid etch them first or something?

I have just had the Alloys painted on the the BiLs Cerb. They company that did them found two cracks in the rear wheels
So although you could just spray paint them take the oppertunity to have a really good look over them to make sure they are 'crack free'.
If they are all ok, and the orignal paint on them is in good condition them a quick spray with 'Halfwits' Gloss black will do the trick!
Have fun on the track

When you have the wheels all spayed up and tyres on get some silver tape, I call it 'Speedtape' and put this over the balance weights. At track speed this will stop the weights flying off.
Also you could mark, on the tyre, two lines where the valve is on the wheel. This will let you know if the tyre is 'creeping' around the rim. If you really want to go 'over the top' fill the tyres with Nitrogen and not air. This will give a move even Temp/Pressure rise and reduce the risk of a blow out.
Well thats enough of me talking Crap!
Laterz!
Good luck!

Carl w,
Just seen this thread, as I have been manically busy since returning to work on Monday. Anyway, I had a set of spiders painted black last year, to match my black speed 6.
It was quite expensive to get done (£400 ish plus VAT) tho' I can't quite remember why now - something about needing additional coats over the black paint to protect the paint from corrosive brake dust (?) - whatever, I fell for it at the time.
If I say so myself, they do look great and I would definitely recommend it - I'm sure that it would work well with silver too, tvr john.
So go for it, and please don't tell me when you get them done for half what mine cost!
Just re-read your comment and noted that you plan on a DIY job. It'll definitely be cheaper than mine then!
