On Thursday as I was leaving Homebase I spotted a broken down Fiat Multipa and two women standing by it.

I stopped to help and ended up following them home as one pulled the other (cars that is). It turned out that the lady with the broken down car lived just around the corner from me, so helped her and husband push the car on the drive. Thanked for my help and went on my way.

Fast forward to today, left home early to drive up to visit my Grandparents in hospital. I thought the car wasn't accelerating properly and was just saying to my wife that when the car goes in for it's service to get the garage to check it out when the throttle cable snapped and the pedal dropped to the floor.

Bugger was my first thought, 2nd was thank god we renewed the RAC cover and 3rd was where the feck are we (Mortimers Cross/Salway Arms not far from Leominster as it happens).

Pull the car over to the side of the road on a straightish piece of road and called the RAC. We were told that the nearest patrol was 2hrs away but they would do their best to get out to us as my wife is pregnant. Anyway a car stops to offer assistance, explained the problem with the car and that we were going to start walking back to the Little Chef as we'd already called the RAC.

They ended up turning their car around (leaving me with a chair to sit on) and drove my wife to the Little Chef down the road, then came back to me with a mechanic friend they'd found nearby to look at the car. He then tried ringing around to get a cable with no luck. At this point the RAC called to say they were an hour away so we said our thanks and parted company.

I ended walking the 20mins back to the Little Chef and the RAC patrol picked me up from there and took me back to the car where he made up a make shift throttle cable.

So anyway big thanks to the people that stopped for me today (and the RAC) and remember what goes around comes around!

I'm not into any of that religious twaddle, but small acts of kindness go a long way to making your day a better experience.hippy

It's always nice to hear that there are good, honest and decent people left in this country.

In my experience, the vast majority of people are good, honest and decent.

Well done OP.

I wonder how many of us would have a first instinct to help, then shy away because we think they'd think we were rapists?

There was a TV programme where they got a girl actor of about 8 to sit on a street corner crying, then filmed the public's reaction to her. Not surprisingly, everybody walked past and ignored her - the risk of being branded a paedophile is just too great it seems. Eventually an old lady stopped to help her.

We do seem to live in a world of fear and selfishness.
