Does anyone know of someone in the UK who has successfully fitted cruise control to an elise?

If you have fly by wire throttle it should be easy to retro fit, there are loads of aftermarket kits around

I'd normally be tremendously cynical about such a device on an Elise but with the great abundance of average speed checks on the M1 at the moment it'd be very helpful actually.

I've had the dubious honour of travelling from Leeds to Donington Park 3 out of the last 4 weekends and I reckon there's about 25 miles of roadworks on that 75 miles route now. Despite my resolute best efforts, it's a struggle not to deploy the majority of one's concentration on the speedo needle rather than the traffic around you.

You would need the DBW throttle, but to be honest it's not the most difficult car (although I've only extensively driven cable throttle) to keep at a constant speed - the engine note gives it away so easily if you vary from the speed you want to be doing without having to watch the needle all the time (speaking as someone who lives between two sets of 50mph limit on the M1 at the moment).

But the answer isnt cruise control - it's back roads.

Can't see the merit in berating anyone online myself, but Pistonheads is a world unto itself...

I take the point re back roads (and in principle whole-heartedly concur) but sometimes you just need to get to your destination and if you don't know any of the back roads it's easier to plump for the option you know. Maybe I'll research an alternative route over the off-season.

Being an old phrrt, I go back to the days before motorways were built and we went everywhere on trunk roads or A or B roads. These roads are still there and some are a lot less used nowadays because the traffic has been diverted to the motorways.

I use a Garmin GPS which allows me to pre plan routes on the PC and so avoid the usual quickest / shortest alternatives and then to download to the car unit.

I have to say, i find the cruise control in the Beemer very useful for the journies - while i'd hestiate to say its something fitting for an elise... i can see why someone would want it..

I know what you mean, Ian. As it's there, use it. When I'm in fleet cars at work I will usually have the cruise control wherever possible - I don't see any reason for exceeding the prevailing speed limit when I'm driving for the company's benefit.

With regards to A and B roads, I will certainly investigate alternative routes to Donington and Silverstone and am tempted to use the A1 at the moment. As I have no satnav and more often than not tend to do these journeys alone I mostly stick to roads I know to minimise my travelling time.
