Help - heater flap error

Returning home from a very soggy BNG I found my warm air vents were not demisting the windscreen. Two reasons - (1)I only have an intermitent fan control ('Error 26 heater flap' message kept appearing), and (2) even when working (bottom vents ok) nothing coming out of the top vents. Anybody else had this experience?
Could it be -

- heater amplifier that I've seen reference to on here (where is this? Passenger footwell?,
- heater matrix (which I believe is in the silicon sealed box at rear NS engine bay?)
- or something else? 20 amp fuse is fine, but relay not tested

Thoughts?

The heater flap motor is under the heater matrix its a bit of an arse to get at as you have to remove the sealant to get to it. The up side is you can see if the heater flap moves and test the motor.

The heater amp is stuck under the dash on the PS side. Its a small square box with a 4 pin plug on it. These do fail but it might be an iffy connection. I would check this first as its easy. Sounds like a poor connection if the fault is intermitant. If its knackered there is a place in Luton near me that fixes them, costs about £50

You can also set the heater flap 'zero position' from the pod. sometimes this is the cause of hot air leaking when set to cold. On mine when set to hot you only get air from the 2 dash vents, when cold its the face level vents and footwell.

All connections checked and appear good/dry. Fan kicks in a couple of minutes after ignition switched on. Switch off/on and no fan, then it kicks in again. I suspect it is something in the heater box/flap, as when fan blowing on full/hot there is nothing getting to the top vents.

More investigation ...
