Recovering images
Discussion
Guys some help please.
I had some probs with my camera (D70s) while on hols, had to fromat the card a couple of times (once on the camera and once using a card reader on my pc). In the process I lost some photos, my wife has been into a camera shop and they can send the card off and possibly recover the images (although they will charge whether the images are recovorable or not).
Is this the best course of action or are there other options?
Many thanks
Gareth

A bit of background -
Each memory card has an "index" and this index determines where the actual file will be written to on the memory card.
When you format a card it is the index which is cleared not the actual pictures.
So if you have formatted a your card and then gone on to take some more pictures they will have more than likely over written the pictures which were already on the card. Obviously it does depend on how many more pictures you have taken.
Some the recent cards I have brought have come with a recovery CD.
A quick trawl on the internet will come up with some suggestions for software which you could recover the pictures yourself.
One that looked reasonable with free trial download was
http://www.cardrecovery.com/download.asp. I haven't tried this but it does look straight forward to use. No doubt others will have suggestions as to what software they use.

In the first instance, try something like WinUndelete, http://www.winundelete.com/?rid=google&kid=wu0... . Will cost you about £35 to download but you can specify it to check the card only (use a card reader). Pretty powerful and can often produce a result even when cards have been reformatted. Failing that, a professional company may be able to help but it'll cost.I had some probs with my camera (D70s) while on hols, had to fromat the card a couple of times (once on the camera and once using a card reader on my pc).
