I know it is early days yet, but spotted this today:

Slower diesels and faster petrols? Very good thing. Having an orange and blue car on the podium next year would do niceley thanks.

Are Audi/Peugeot being sponsored by Gulf next year then? wink

You might have overlooked this little rule;

ACO said:
GT1 engines in P1 will breathe less easily through 2.4% smaller restrictors.
which means the Lola-Aston unhomologated engines will be less powerful next year.

However, these rules really help the Ginettas, which is excellent.

I only saw this:

Diesel Engines: 2.1% decrease in restrictor size (to 37.5mm), Supercharger pressure reduced by 5.8% to 2590mbar

Petrol Engines: 5% increase in restrictor size (to 33.3mm)

GT1 based Engines: 2.4% increase (33.3mm)

GT1 based engines can be fitted with DBW throttle, direct injection and the design of the air box is free.



I'm a little confused, are GT1 based P1 engines getting bigger or smaller restrictors?

P1 cars that use GT1 engines (Lola Aston-Martin are the only ones so far) will have a small restrictor next year. Here's the link to the ACO document;

In brief, these engines will have the following changes;

GT1 engine
(de 5.5 à 6.l)

2009 2010 2009/2010 Variation (air restrictor surface)
Restrictor (for 2 restrictors) 32.7 mm 33.3 mm + 2.4%
Advantage engine restrictor over 8 cylinders 0.4 mm 0.2 mm
Restrictor advantage for closed cars 0.3 mm 0.3 mm


So from that I take it as a 2.4% bigger surface area of restrictor (DSC confirms as well).


Also the other details you mention are in fact;

GT1 engine regulations in LM P1:

GT1 engines installed in LM P1s must comply with article 5 of the LM GT1 regulations
(see: www.lemans.org) with the exception of:
  • Accelerator (free)
  • Direct injection (modifications to the cylinder heads must be approved by the ACO)
  • Air box (volume free)
Remember also, these are regulations for next year only. The 2011 regulations could be quite interesting when they are released in September.

so what aston have to do to avoid this penalty in order to get full homologated(?)status?

I know it'll be in the regs somwhere, but assume some kind soul knows already and would be nice enough to tell me?

Hmm, I was thinking of it as the diameter of the area open to flow in the restrictor - seems the logical way to designate the size to me - especially given that the units are for a length, not an area, might just be my interpretation though

The regulations state 'air restrictor surface' though.

ACO regs are never known to be that well worded, bu that was also the report from the ACO press conference on DSC.

Not use a GT1 engine.

There was a lot of contention this year (hidden by the Peugeot / Audi squabble) about Aston's engine. Oreca were ready to protest it along with some other teams. In the race they ran the car with direct injection. There isn't (wasn't) a car in the Aston range with that system on it, thus the engine was unhomologated. If they had reached the podium I suspect the teams would have protested. It gave the cars a fuel economy advantage.

Cheers,so if they brought out a standard dbs/db9 with the engine, assuming it would fit, they would be fine. Is it like the old rallying regs that they would need to sell a certain amount to get through the regs?

Yup, same basic homologation rules.

It's just the injection system that is (was) iffy. The block and other ancillaries are the same as the production range/GT1 car.
