Hi all,

It is close to for me to find 2 new tires for my golf. Having never had to buy tires for a normal car before what with having Land Rovers and S2k’s in the past I’m not sure what to do?

Currently I have on the back some Hankook’s which where new when I brought the car and these have been recommended to me by a friend who has a Passat who also mentioned that this is what VW recommends. On the front and the reason for change are some tires I have not heard of and they don’t fill me with confidence in the wet, I will have a look tonight and see what they are. They still have tread left but I will change them before the winters come in so around October time to be safe.

I’m thinking about getting some more Hankook’s on the so I have 4 tires the same but not sure what they would be like on the front. Does anyone have any recommendations? Should I just go with some Michelins or Goodyear tires as they a 'quality' brand?

I have Pirelli P6000's on my Mk4 Golf GTI and they're fine. I think any from Hankook, Mich or Pirelli would be ok.

Whenever this question comes up for any car the general response is to get Falken 452s. I've not used them yet but they're meant to be as good as £100-plus Pirellis etc, but half the price. A search on here will tell you all you need to know.

Thank you for the replies. From doing a little checking last night I might just get 2 more Hankook's so I have a set of 4 tires all the same. I have heard about how good the Falken 452s are so they could be a possibility but think for now will get the Hankooks.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's on my Golf 1.8T. They are able to cope with the 355bhp going through the front wheels on my car, provide excellent grip in wet and dry and even have reasonable wear considering they are a farily soft compound.

Around £110 a corner (last time I bought some anyway) in 18" flavour though so a bit dearer than the other options listed above.

I did have Eagle F1s on my Golf but it seemed to get through these rather too quickly for my liking, currently have a set of Falken 452s which I'm happy with, seem to offer similar levels of grip in wet and dry for a smaller dent in my wallet! They were a bit of a sod to get hold of round my way though.

The worst tyre I have ever driven on, ditchfinder extremes.
