What to do...printing?
Discussion
It may be the 'summer' holidays, but #1 child has a school project; he has to print a calendar. Actually, he wants to print a calendar - about 10 of 'em so Vistaprint is a no go - too bloody expensive. We had a go at home but you just don't get the quality with an inkjet, and photo paper can't be written on with a standard felt tip/biro/pencil so that's out, too.
Any PHers out there able to do us a fab deal on ten copies of a 13 page, A4, spiral bound-with-a-little-hangy-loop-thing-in-the-middle publication for not much money? He's only 10 so not got much of an income.
I wouldn't normally ask, only they've been off school since middle of July and I'm knackered...

OK, how about www.photobox.co.uk/shop/calendars-and-diaries ?
Not sure why you need 10 copies to appease teacher though.

...oh, forgot, they're already laid up and ready to print so he can't go with a template. Bloody thing. They had to be to a specific design with captions and stuff. He may have to use some of the many millions of free 6x4 photo stock and start glueing...though we all know where THAT will end - on me bloody new carpet!
Nowt's ever easy wi' kids.

Bread and butter job to a small jobbing printer with a little digital press - ring round a few local ones.
When I was in the business we paid per click for our digital press. About 30p per SRA3 I think so cost wise it would have worked out at about a fiver each with the binding.
I'd have thought your looking at £10 each, £100 is a lot of money for a school project.
Had a sign in my office which read...
You can have a good job but it won't be cheap

You pays your money etc.

Just seen your post, Ozone. How would these sorts of pix come out? Staples would do the spiral binding and she said they could do the printing but it would be very expensive (patronising the child as she said it, mind). I think the spiral binding might not be much, something like 2 or 3 quid each...See - we're already in the realms of many tenners. The boy's got a lot of gardening to do...
As for numbers, he wants to give some to fave teachers and some to family, so we can kind of forgive some of the expense.

Seems like your main problem is a printer that will print a decent black without stripes. Again, if you have a decent inkjet with pukka cartridges and paper it should be OK - albeit heavy on ink!
But hang on, what's being judged here? The quality of the printer? The wealth of the parent? Or the creativity of the pupil?

They wouldn't be shiny photo quality but reasonable matt, half shiny. It also depends on the quality and size of the picture. If it needs to be expanded up to A4 alot then they would become pixellated.

The printer can print a decent darkness without stripes, but the distant stars bleed into the inky blackness as though being sucked into a black hole (which, apparently they will be, at some point). But hang on, what's being judged here? As for parental wealth - recovering from redundancy induced belt-tightening.
Pupil creativity - I just don't feel I can tell him "Hey, it's crap, but who cares?" He'd be gutted!

Hmm, I see your point - ink creep could make the stars disappear.Suggest he adapts his project to X-Ray astronomy, which wil give a white background with black stars!

Should get them for £2 (ish) a pop. So £20 all in.
