Hi All
Hope you all had a great mid winter festival of choice.

The classic car Retromobile Show is on in Paris from 13 to 22 February 2004. It's located in the exhibition halls by the Porte de Versailles exit of the Peripherique.

If you don't want to drive, Neil Engert Special Tours is again offering a ferry and coach deal from Dover on Friday 13 February (don't worry, the channel crossing used is after midnight !!!) for £41.75. There is ample parking in the multi-storey by the ferry terminal.

Neil is a charming old gentleman whose tours to Retromobile I have used in the past. If you're interested in this trip, call and leave a message on 01923 821342.

(He is also arranging a trip to the Essen show on Thursday 1 April. 5days/4 nights "from" £169.)

I have no commercial connection whatever with N.E.S.T. - I am on their mailing list as a previous customer.

The 2003 show's centrepiece was the record-breakers display. The poster sites around the Peripherique were emblazoned with posters portraying Donald Campbell's Bluebird with both the Union and Australian flags on its nose. Star of the show for me was Seagrave's Golden Arrow, the Napier engined projectile on tyres that I wouldn't trust at 75 let alone 200mph. Sunbeam, Renault and Citroen record cars were present as well. There was a large display by Christies with many RR, Bentley, Jaguar and Bugatti supercars. MG were well represented with cars all over the show- I'd never seen better MGA TwinCams, also TC and TFs. The car I wanted to drive home was an Alpine with 3 litre engine although the Maserati 3200GT racer also appealed. The Michelin tyre making demo was missing, its space taken by a display of "50 years of Corvettes".

The show was bursting at the seams now with hordes of dealers of model cars as well as the real thing. Very little space for boats either- just a few examples of classic speedboats. Still space for a number of military vehicles including "jeeps" from Peugeot and Delahaye.

We paid 52p per litre for diesel and brought home the usual wine, cheese and coffee groceries. Weather was cool and misty but dry- an easy drive making good time with the 82mph speed limit on the toll roads.

My own preference is to use the 22:30 P&O from Portsmouth to Le Havre overnight on the Friday returning on the 23:15 on Saturday. That seems to give enough time at the show with shopping/sightseeing, etc. and no need for accommodation in Paris. Ferry tickets are usually about £90 for 2/3 sharing a cabin each way. Entry to the show is about £8 with parking on site about the same.

Cheers
Ian
