This isn't a thread designed to further prolong the argument about how much oil is left, and whether we need to worry about it now.

However much is left, we can't get away from the fact that one day, be it in 10 years, 100 years or 1,000, it is going to run out.

It's easy to think we've probably got enough time to find a viable alternative to powering our cars, but what about everything else? Petrochemicals are just so deeply ingrained into almost every aspect of our lives that replacing it with something else just seems utterly impossible!

What do people think a post-oil future holds, whenever it does arrive?

And just as a subtext, has there ever been, and will there ever be any single discovery that will have more impact on the human race?

As oil gets more scarce, the price will rise and then other sources become financially viable - notably the Canadian oil shale fields.

The only long term answer, what with global exponential population thingy, unless we're to revert to the dark ages, is nuclear fusion. Or build rockets to found new civilisations on other planets - oh, but think of the carbon footprint...

I think i've seen a documentary about this. There will be a war and any oil left will be protected by small communities that will be attacked by gangs on motorcycles.... oh, wait.......

It will be a seamless transition (more of less) as the oil will not just stop per se just reduce, much like it's doing now and has been since the 70's and we have not been that effected.

It's nothing to worry about.

Go and have a wk.

[quote=sevros1981]1 Hydrogen power/quote]

You still have to find the energy to split the seawater into hydrogen and oxygen...

Gas.

Transportable as LNG.

Liquid through GTL.

Cooking with gas.

Gas. Just gas. No oil needed - especially not that mucky Canadian stuff.

Bring China and India online and it won't last as an economically viable source of power for hundreds of years.

I'm buying, or otherwise obtaining, several guns, planting some veg, getting me a Suffolk Punch or three, getting rid of all but 3 pigs, and going organic.

It'll be fine.

Buy 'The Last Oil Shock' by David Strahan.

He explains eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeverything.

Essentially, hydrogen? Not viable as a sole alternative.

Biofuel? Likewise.

Electricity? Likewise. (Only as an alternative fuel for cars)

Go back and read my original thread, you lot. I'm not interested in when it will run out. It's a natural resource that took millions of years to produce, so at some point, it is definitely going to run out.

I'm just interested in what might be realistic alternative routes that we go down for the future.

And I answered that question. Go back and read my response.

Meanwhile I'm going to argue with the div.

The more interesting question is - has demand peaked?

most uses of oil can be replaced by other means. oils just cheaper.
