xbox live help

Here we go again, my son wants to go onto Xbox live, which is all set up to go, now i know that you can apparently get a free months trial, how is this achieved? we have gone so far on the Xbox box putting in info and now it is asking for credit card details, do i need to proceed with this to get a free months trial? I am not keen on putting my credit card details in, but we are unable to proceed any further until i do. Is this the only way or is there another way without putting credit card details in?
You can buy pre-paid cards, this stops the credid card thing, best not to if it's for your son, as they can charge it everytime they want microsoft points (used to buy downloadable games and such)
You can buy the cards in game shops, supermarkets or off the internet. If you need the code straight away then there are websites that scratch off the panel and e-mail you the code straight away. I've used them before and they are legit.

There should have been a free months trial code in the box when you bought the console (at least there was when I bought mine). If you don't have a card with a code on it then you'll need to buy one I'm afraid.

We still have all of the bumf and cables etc but cant recall a card with a code in the box unfortunately, however if i bought a gold members card for him, where do i put the card number in? we cant seem to proceed any further until i put my credit card details in. Surely i dont have to put them in if i am not paying that way just to proceed any further?

Silver membership allows you to download content etc
Gold membership allows you to play live online.
What you do is create a new account on the xbox, then click on 'join xbox live', go through some steps, then when it says 'select membership type' you CHOOSE SILVER. This then says "ok, by the way you have 1 month free of GOLD membership".
Let me know if that works or not. You get 4 "1 month trials" per xbox, requiring a new account each time. After the one month the account will drop down from Gold to Silver. You can then extend the Gold membership using credit card or a store bought scratchcard.
HTH.

Thanks for all your advice guys, i have managed to get my lad a free months trial, no credit card details or scratch card needed, dont exactly know what went wrong when we tried before but we have created a new profile now and changed the email ad to my own. So he`s happy and i`m happy, i can relax now. (phew).
I will set him up with a 12 month gold card next, but want to see how much he uses the Xbox first as he didn`t tend to go on there that often before.

Well done!
Can I ask what age your son is? You might want to think about the types of games he's playing online. I play Halo 3 a fair bit and there is often a lot of adult language (sweary mostly). I think there's an option in the parental controls section of the xbox dashboard where you can disable online chat.
Your kid and your decision, I'm just letting you know what happens on xbox live chat and that you can turn it off if you want.
Cheers

I have to say some of the worse language that I have heard on XBL has come from adolescent americans in both Forza and CoD4 where they think making abusive comments.Cheers
