Ross Brawn says there is 'no good reason' not to retain both Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello next year, ahead of the team opening 2010 contract talks with the pair next week.

Although Button's future with Brawn has been all but guaranteed, pending improved financial terms on the back of his successful season, there were no guarantees about the identity of his team-mate.

However, Rubens Barrichello's victory in the European Grand Prix, and a run of form that has hauled him back into championship contention, appears to have left him favourite to stay on for another season.

When asked if the form of his two drivers meant there was any argument for not keeping them on board again, Brawn said: "There is no good reason not to [keep them]. They are both doing a very good job, so I think after Spa we will start to look at it.

"We needed to get a number of things in place before you can sensibly talk about drivers. The Concorde Agreement is done now, that was done in the break. We think our commercial side is going to develop well now, so we can sit down after Spa, talk with the drivers and sort it out."

The only consideration the team may have to make is whether to stick with a successful experienced driver like Barrichello, or choose to bring in a young driver that it can help develop for the longer term.

Brawn CEO Nick Fry said: "You always need to look towards the future, but both have made any decisions we may or may not have to make very difficult. If we were to run with Jenson and Rubens next year I am sure we will be very successful.

"But it is not really top of our mind at the moment. They are both winning races, they are both doing a great job and, like the commercial side, we are not short of offers. But we are not with the need to rush into things either.

"We've got a good team, a great car, a superb team principal who has won lots of championships and I think we will be a good place to be. We are not waiting for an Alonso outcome this year, whereas we were last season. We will make a decision in the fullness of time, but it is not a priority at the moment."

I know Rubens won at the weekend but after his previous outburst, are Brawn really looking at sticking with him?

If you have 2 drivers in your team who can both drive well enough to be title contenders, then I think you can forgive the latin temprement of Rubens. 2 high scoring drivers = more income for the team.

True BUT they wont have the early season advantage next year, we have noticed them struggle recently as Ferrari/Mclaren catch up. I would have thought Kubica would have been getting looked at to partner Jenson.

I was reading something the other day (F1 magazine interview with Ross Brawn I think) where he was discussing the restructuring of the team post Honda; effectively to match the budget cuts the other 'big' teams are going to have to go the same way... the point made was that Brawn GP are a step ahead in trying to match resources to the brave new world...

Rubens is driving as well if not better than Button and his recent outburst at least shows that he's still motivated and not just there for his pension fund.

Good point . Pay him less. Not heard any teams say we've just got to have Button.

Why pay him less? If he is worth the money, he should be paid it. I see no point putting the screws on Button and pissing him off when he is still the top contender to win this years drivers championship.

If I was Ross Brawn, I would give him the fking boot at the end of the season for making such an outburst
in public. Hamilton could have said something similar when the mechanics botched the pit stop at Valencia
which cost him the race but you didn't hear him moan in the same way.

Bari is a known quantity though. Ross Brawn likes working with him and they obviously have a strong relationship, despite a few public outbursts. Rubens & Jenson genuinely seem to get on too, another plus for team harmony. He's driving well too, regardless of his age. I agree with Brawn, why change if it works now. He's got a latin passion for the sport, as long as that's used positively, crack on!

Because it was Hamilton that caused the problem. Not for the first time this year he's tried to force the strategy because he knew better than everyone else and this time it cost him. He was told he had enough fuel for 1 more lap (in plenty of time) but he wouldn't be told, and came in the pit lane when the crew thought he was going round again.

If Ruben's is fit enough there is no reason why he shouldn't be as quick as someone 15 years his jounior. Mansell was 39 when he won his championship. Fangio was 46 when he won his last championship. It's a lack of commitment that makes older drivers get slower not the aging of the body like most other sports people.

Where did you get that information from?

Exactly, Andy.

There is one, and only one, guy at McLaren who is paid to make split-second decisions about what it is possible to do with his car whilst it is on the track (I'm referring to the car with the number "1" on it.).
The team have already said that they were waiting for the last possible second to decide whether to have him take an extra lap. Absent that affirmative decision, he was expected to come into the pits. They appear to have made the Plan B call just a fraction too late, but it was too late. Perhaps they could have told Lewis in the last sector that they might keep him out for one more lap, but in the event failed to give him that heads-up. We have no information to the contrary.

This "but he wouldn't be told" notion is silly. Does anyone think that Hamilton monitors his own fuel usage, and believes that he understands it better than his engineers do? Come on.

In any case he actualy wasn't lapping quickly enough to be able to hold off Rubens' challenge. Even without the balls up he wouldn't have won.

Your lack of justification to your previous post indicates that you have none, which does somewhat reduce the credibility of this statement. It has been debated at length on at least two other threads, however.

Brawn have a point regarding drivers, however. With the way they are both working this year there is probably little benefit to be gained by making changes, dependant upon who may become available with various other driver swaps which may or may not happen of course.
