Can't see this posted anywhere (probably is though)

Im sure some of you have already signed this, other may not have

If you wish to support the petition for a campaign medal for those who served in BC during WW2 sign up here

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/WW2BOMBERCOMMAMD/

please don't let this descend into any kind of pro /con of bombing during WW2, that would be another thread. Simply ignore and move along if you don't want to sign up etc etc.

Will do.

I can't recall if this was raised on PH before but there was also a campaign to have the former RAF Bicester preserved as a Bomber Command memorial too and this WAS raised on PH. That topic is probably buried in the old P&P storeroom somewhere - amongst all the dusty, upturned chairs and tables.

My grandad switched from the RAF to the Navy (fleet air arm) as a fitter. Having worked on Spitfires (at Westhampnett/Goodwood and then Halifax's he was transferred to the Navy and was working on Corsairs - about to be transferred to the Pacific when the Americans dropped 'the bomb'

It wasn't unusual to switch. That's why I asked.

The RAF also used a small number of Swordfish as well - so I was curious if he had flown on RN or RAF Swordfish.

My Granddad was a tail-end charlie on Lancs, shot down over Belgium and evaded capture.

To be truthful, there was only a "rear" gun on a Swordfish. The role of the "gunner" was actually termed "Wireless Operator/Air Gunner" usually shortened to "WOP/AG".

Absolute hero's the lot of 'em.My father was a flight engineer in Lancasters and completed a tour of duty,so was one of the lucky ones.Over 55,000 brave men weren't so lucky. It amazes me that there was never a medal of recognition for Bomber Command. That mistake should be redressed now.

We all know the reasons.

It should be sorted before there are too few of them left.
